Gavin Newsom (D) extended the state\u2019s indoor mask mandate through February 15 amid concerns about the spread of the omicron variant of the coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Newsom reimposed the mask mandate with an initial end date of January 15. Instead, the state\u2019s Health and Human Services Secretary, Dr. Mark Ghaly,&nbsp;<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/california-mask-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a>&nbsp;an extension on Wednesday:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote>\n<p>At that time, we will again re-evaluate the condition across California, our communities and our health-care delivery settings to make sure that we are taking the latest information into account to determine if there would be another extension, or if we\u2019re prepared to lift that requirement across the state. (Photo by Mario Tama\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Although California officials are worried about omicron, recent&nbsp;<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/cloth-face-mask-omicron-11640984082#:~:text=Time%20it%20takes,Response%20Task%20Force\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a>&nbsp;suggest cloth masks may be ineffective in protecting against the latest variant. California\u2019s mask rule does not mandate the use of N95 masks, which are more protective than the cloth or surgical masks that millions of Californias wear daily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you really want no exposure, you have to wear the right type of mask,\u201d&nbsp;<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/cloth-masks-may-not-protect-against-omicron-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;Dr. Monica Gandhi, a University of California, San Francisco infectious disease specialist.<\/p>\n<p>California\u2019s mask mandate applies to both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals. Close to 80 percent of Californians have taken at least one dose of the vaccine, and health officials report nearly 144,000 people a day are taking a vaccine.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>California health officials reported 21,000 new coronavirus cases the day before Newsom extended the mask mandate. These cases come after close to 45,000 cases were&nbsp;<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailynews.com\/2022\/01\/02\/la-county-sees-another-sharp-rise-in-coronavirus-hospitalizations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;over New Year\u2019s weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the statewide mask mandate, state officials remain committed to letting the Super Bowl occur in Los Angeles, California.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Super Bowl is coming to L.A,\u201d Ghaly&nbsp;<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Elex_Michaelson\/status\/1478865672771756032?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1478865672771756032%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/california-mask-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a>&nbsp;local reporters when asked about the future of the game.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">CA&#8217;s HHS Sec.
