The move has also caught the attention of Republican Senate Leadership.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWholly aside from all the other things they\u2019re discussing, this is something that\u2019s worth discussing,\u201d said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), via The Hill.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-SD) added that Senate Republicans believe \u201cthat there are some things there that could be fixed,\u201d and that \u201cthere\u2019s been some expression of interest\u201d by several members.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are several things I think you could [change] if you were looking at doing it,\u201d Thune told The Hill, but he added that \u201cI don\u2019t think anybody\u2019s come to any conclusions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Senators have floated several ideas, The Hill reports, including clarifying the vice president\u2019s role in the counting process, and upping the number of votes needed to object to a state\u2019s electoral count from just one Senator and one House member to one-third of both chambers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the role of the vice president needs to be codified, so it\u2019s clear what that is,\u201d Thune said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the last time [former Vice President Mike] Pence followed precedent,\u201d Thune added. \u201cThere\u2019s some question about how many senators it ought to take, or House members it ought to take to object before it triggers a vote, I mean there\u2019s questions around that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democratic Senate Majority Leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/schumer-vows-vote-on-changing-senate-rules-if-gop-continues-to-block-efforts\">Chuck Schumer<\/a> (NY), who has promised to force a vote on changing the Senate rules in order to ram through a pair of Democratic election overhaul bills, blasted Republicans\u2019 discussions, arguing that they are not going far enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet me take this opportunity to make clear that plan, the McConnell plan that\u2019s what it is, is unacceptably insufficient and even offensive,\u201d Schumer complained in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3WHMbIRLtlo\">speech on the Senate floor<\/a> Thursday.&nbsp;\u201cScore-keeping matters little if the game is rigged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration has also asserted that it wants the two voting bills passed, and that an overhaul of the counting process is an unacceptable compromise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe President has been crystal clear that the pending voting rights legislation, the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, are essential for protecting the constitutional right to vote, the rule of law, and the integrity of our elections against un-American attacks based on the Big Lie,\u201d said White House spokesperson Andrew Bates, via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/01\/05\/mcconnell-electoral-count-act-reform-526542\">Politico<\/a>. \u201cThere is no substitute. Period.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McConnell himself slammed Democrats Thursday for attempting to use the anniversary of the January 6 Capitol riot in order to rationalize their efforts to pass the voting bills. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/mcconnell-democrats-are-trying-to-exploit-january-6-to-advance-partisan-policy-goals\">Daily Wire<\/a> reported:<\/p>\n<p><em>After reflecting on the seriousness of the criminal behavior of that day, McConnell focused his attention on the Democrats\u2019 treatment of the January 6 anniversary. \u201c[It] has been stunning to see some Washington Democrats try to exploit this anniversary to advance partisan policy goals that long predated this event,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is especially jaw-dropping to hear some Senate Democrats invoke the mob\u2019s attempt to disrupt our country\u2019s norms, rules, and institutions as a justification to discard our norms, rules, and institutions themselves.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>While McConnell doesn\u2019t specify exactly what \u201cnorms, rules, and institutions\u201d the Democrats are trying to discard, it\u2019s likely that he is referring to recent Democrat attempts to change Senate rules to pass voting rights legislation.
