Although he grew up in a farm in Yamhill, Kristof did not meet Oregon\u2019s requirement that all candidates live within the state for three years before seeking office, according to Secretary of State Shemia Fagan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rules are the rules and they apply equally to all candidates for office in Oregon. I stand by the determination of the experts in the Oregon Elections Division that Mr. Kristof does not currently meet the Constitutional requirements to run or serve as Oregon Governor,\u201d Fagan said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregon.gov\/newsroom\/Pages\/NewsDetail.aspx?newsid=64720\">statement<\/a>. \u201cThe Oregon Elections Division and local election officials use the same standards to determine qualifications for hundreds of candidates in dozens of offices every year. In this instance, the candidate clearly does not meet the constitutional requirement to run or serve as governor of Oregon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kristof claimed to have moved back to Oregon in 2019 to run his family\u2019s farm but voted in New York during the 2020 elections, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opb.org\/article\/2022\/01\/06\/nicholas-nick-kristof-oregon-governor-candidate-qualification-ruling\/\">according<\/a> to Oregon Public Broadcasting.<\/p>\n<p>The long-time journalist promised to sue for ballot access, accusing a \u201c<span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">failing political establishment\u201d of denying \u201cvoters a choice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">A failing political establishment in Oregon has chosen to protect itself, rather than give voters a choice.
