He and his alleged co-conspirator have pleaded not guilty to charges in connection to the killing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201c[Dave Patrick Underwood] was shot and killed by a man who had traveled to Oakland, Calif., with an intent to kill federal agents, according to federal prosecutors,\u201d The Wall Street Journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/new-lawsuit-seeks-to-hold-facebook-liable-in-shooting-death-of-federal-security-guard-11641481833?mod=hp_lista_pos1\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Underwood\u2019s sister, Angela Underwood Jacobs, is in the process of now suing Facebook in California Superior Court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cFacebook bears responsibility for the murder of my brother,\u201d Angela Underwood Jacobs said in a statement, per <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/facebook-promoted-extremism-leading-federal-officer-dave-patrick\/story?id=82091562\">ABC News<\/a>. \u201cFacebook knowingly promoted inflammatory and violent content and connected extremists who plotted and carried out the killing of my brother. Facebook must be held responsible for the harm it has caused not just my family, but so many others through its promotion of extremist content and by promoting algorithms to actively recruit members to its web platform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">\u201cFacebook aided and abetted an act of domestic terrorism,\u201d Underwood Jacobs said, per the Journal. \u201cNo one is holding Facebook accountable, and that\u2019s wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">The complaint detailed the alleged connection of Facebook to the killing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe shooting was not a random act of violence. It was the culmination of an extremist plot hatched and planned on Facebook by two men who Meta connected through Facebook\u2019s groups infrastructure and its use of algorithms designed and intended to increase user engagement and, correspondingly, Meta\u2019s profits,\u201d the complaint <a href=\"https:\/\/s3.documentcloud.org\/documents\/21174499\/underwood-v-meta-complaint.pdf\">read<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">\u201cMeta\u2019s algorithms promote extremism by exposing users to inflammatory, divisive, and untrue content. Meta has elected to do this because material that engenders a strong emotional reaction engages readers,\u201d it continued.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">\u201cMeta\u2019s algorithms reward the most prolific users, recommending their content, even though hyperactive use is associated with partisan accounts and suspicious use patterns suggestive of shift-work or bot activity. Facebook accounts that are known for and promote misinformation generate almost twice as much engagement per follower than other accounts. [\u2026] As such Meta\u2019s policy to promote the most engaging content promotes accounts that push misinformation,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">\u201cMeta\u2019s failure to warn users about the insidious effects and real-world harms caused by its decision to promote extremist groups and develop inflammatory content is inexcusable considering what Meta\u2019s own research shows about how Meta\u2019s algorithms work,\u201d it noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Wall Street Journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/new-lawsuit-seeks-to-hold-facebook-liable-in-shooting-death-of-federal-security-guard-11641481833?mod=hp_lista_pos1\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">&nbsp;A Facebook spokesman said the claims are without legal basis. In the past, the company has said it has worked with law enforcement on the case. The spokesman said the company has banned more than 1,000 \u201cmilitarized social movements\u201d from its platform.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act protects internet companies such as Facebook from being held liable for certain actions.
