One teacher who has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.benitojuarez.net\/apps\/staff\/\">worked<\/a> at the Benito Juarez Community Academy, which is part of the Chicago Public Schools system, commented on Facebook, \u201cI feel no pain. They can cancel school until June and I\u2019ll be fine. Been training for this moment all my life,\u201d as <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/campus\/chicago-schools-close-after-teachers-union-votes-for-remote-learning\/\">The Washington Free Beacon<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChicago teachers bragged on Facebook about potentially being eligible to receive reimbursements for sick days they scheduled for Wednesday, which they no longer need to take because of the closing,\u201d The Beacon noted, with one fourth-grade teacher suggesting that the district should \u201crun me back my sick days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In January 2021, the Chicago Teachers\u2019 Union&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailywire.com\/news\/is-this-a-parody-account-teachers-from-chicago-union-perform-no-return-interpretative-dance-get-mocked\/\">released a video<\/a>&nbsp;showing six of their members who were dance teachers performing an interpretative dance to express their feelings about refusing to return to work unless they felt \u201csafe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The union tweeted the video, titled, \u201cThe Moment We\u2019re Safe,\u201d with the caption, \u201cSix of our rank-and-file dance teachers come together to use their art form as a voice to express their desire to feel safe amidst CPS\u2019 teacher return policy. They stand in solidarity with all educators at risk, because no one should have to choose between life and livelihood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A voice in the video intoned, \u201cI will survive without you,\u201d followed by another voice intoning, \u201cMake it make sense\u2026 Safety is essential\u2026 Keep our students and our teachers safe\u2026 Safe\u2026 It\u2019s our livelihood versus our lives\u2026 Safe\u2026 In this moment, be safe\u2026 Safe\u2026 Our children deserve to be safe\u2026 We want to be safe\u2026 Safe\u2026 We want to feel safe\u2026 Safe return or no return.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Six of our rank-and-file dance teachers come together to use their art form as a voice to express their desire to feel safe amidst CPS&#8217; teacher return policy. They stand in solidarity with all educators at risk, because no one should have to choose between life and livelihood. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/gajXH9PReE\">pic.twitter.com\/gajXH9PReE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 ChicagoTeachersUnion (@CTULocal1) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CTULocal1\/status\/1353012995807457287?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 23, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/chicago-teachers-union-votes-to-refuse-in-person-teaching-will-not-show-for-work\/\">The Daily Wire<\/a>&nbsp;reported at the time that the CTU had voted not to return to work, defying an order from the Chicago Public Schools administration:<\/p>\n<p><em>Chicago\u2019s teacher\u2019s union voted on Sunday to defy Chicago Public Schools administration and refuse to return to in-person teaching even though pupils are due back in classrooms on February 1st.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Chicago Public Schools (CPS) has been locked in a power struggle with the union for some time, with teachers and union brass insisting that it is not safe for teachers to return to classrooms, even though Chicago\u2019s private schools have been in-person for months. At one point, the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) suggested that any plan to return to in-classroom teaching&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/chicago-teachers-union-claims-push-to-open-schools-is-racist-and-sexist-sues-to-stop-plan\">would be both racist and sexist<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>As&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/chicago-teachers-refused-to-return-to-in-person-teaching-chicago-now-says-they-will-not-be-paid\">The Daily Wire reported last week<\/a>, some Chicago students \u2014 mostly preschoolers and those students with moderate to severe special needs \u2014 returned to empty classrooms, with teachers calling in sick to resist CPS\u2019s demands that they return to classrooms. The union issued a list of demands to CPS instead, pledging to remain in \u201cvirtual\u201d classrooms until \u201call school employees have had the opportunity to get vaccinated, or until the city\u2019s positivity rate falls to 3 percent and its rate of new cases falls below 400 per day.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In March 2021, the president of the Chicago Teachers Union <a href=\"https:\/\/dailywire.com\/news\/chicago-teachers-union-prez-tells-members-dont-reveal-you-got-vaccine-if-it-means-you-return-to-school\/\">instructed<\/a> his members to omit mentioning that they had received the vaccine for COVID-19 if \u201cit could negatively impact any accommodations you have been granted or requested.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jesse Sharkey stated, \u201cThe union is not going to agree that CPS can violate the plain language of our MOA. So, for now, the union does not have an agreement with CPS on this issue and we do not believe they can mandate disclosure until we complete negotiations.
