For months and months, no one I came into contact with admitted they had Covid. Not neighbors. Not co-workers. Not friends. Not acquaintances. No one,\u201d Cillizza tweeted. \u201cExcept that, with Omicron surging and lots and lots of people now getting it, I\u2019ve found some of these same people telling me they had it last fall or at the start of the pandemic or whenever. Which is fascinating to me. Because it suggests that they were embarrassed or scared to say they (or their family) had it before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy? Probably not one reason for everyone, honestly. But I do think societally we unknowingly turned having Covid into some sort of judgment on your character. Like, getting Covid was a sign you weren\u2019t being responsible or careful enough. Not being a good member of society,\u201d he continued. \u201cThe ubiquity \u2014 thanks to its contagiousness \u2014 of Omicron has changed that dynamic. Some of the stigma of getting Covid has worn off, and made people more comfortable acknowledging that they\u2019ve had it before. Which is a good thing! We need to recognize that getting Covid isn\u2019t a moral failing! It\u2019s a super infectious disease that you can protect against, sure, but can\u2019t guarantee you won\u2019t get it. Anyway, just an observation. Those groups absolutely did make getting COVID into a moral failing, because it meant you were being reckless. Kind of late to be coming around on this. Also, it\u2019s not weird that you know a lot of people that had COVID before but didn\u2019t tell you. Most people don\u2019t go out and about shouting from the rooftops about their various medical conditions.
