The BBC reports that Djokovic\u2019 team \u201chad not requested a visa that permits medical exemptions for being unvaccinated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Djokovic arrived in Australia on Wednesday, and after an 8-hour standoff with Australian officials, was told that he would not be allowed into the country on Thursday. Djokovic\u2019s medical exemption from the COVID-19 vaccine \u2014 which was granted by the Victorian government Tuesday \u2014 was the reason for the standoff, with the announcement that he \u201cfailed to provide appropriate evidence to meet the entry requirements to Australia and his visa has been subsequently cancelled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe visa for Novak Djokovic has been cancelled,\u201d Minister for Health Greg Hunt said. \u201cObviously, that follows a review of the exemption which was provided by the Victorian government process. They were looking at the integrity and the evidence behind it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a matter to him whether he wishes to appeal that, but if a visa is cancelled, someone will have to leave the country,\u201d Hunt continued.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;It&#8217;s one rule for all under this Australian government&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Health Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GregHuntMP?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@GregHuntMP<\/a> confirms unvaccinated tennis star Novak Djokovic will be sent packing after his visa to enter the country was cancelled. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/IF1Lo4U8ES\">pic.twitter.com\/IF1Lo4U8ES<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Sunrise (@sunriseon7) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sunriseon7\/status\/1478841849045348352?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 5, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Djokovic\u2019s lawyers will reportedly challenge the decision.<\/p>\n<p>After months of speculation due to vaccination requirements at the tournament, Djokovic received a medical exemption on Tuesday in order to begin the defense of his 2021 Australian Open title.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNovak Djokovic will compete at the Australian Open and is on his way to Australia,\u201d the tournament <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BenRothenberg\/status\/1478329044156309505?s=20\">said<\/a> in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDjokovic applied for a medical exemption which was granted following a rigorous review process involving two separate independent panels of medical experts,\u201d the tournament continued. \u201cOne of those was the Independent Medical Exemption Review Panel appointed by the Victorian Department of Health. They assessed all applications to see if they met the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) guidelines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, he was delayed upon arrival in Australia, an issue with his visa application being the problem.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/national\/visa-bungle-delays-novak-djokovic-s-entry-into-australia-20220105-p59m75.html?utm_medium=Social&amp;utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1641387869-1\">The Age<\/a> \u2014 an Australian news publication \u2014 Djokovic was held up \u201cdue to concerns over evidence supporting his vaccine exemption, as well as a potentially erroneous visa application.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As stated on The Age:<\/p>\n<p>The 20-time grand slam winner, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/link\/follow-20170101-p59lw1\">who was granted an exemption to play in this month\u2019s Australian Open<\/a>, was being quizzed by Australian Border Force officials in a room at Melbourne Airport until at least 5am.<\/p>\n<p>A federal government source familiar with the episode said there were question marks about whether Djokovic had adequate documentation to prove the reason for his exemption. This evidence is required to be presented at the border by unvaccinated people.<\/p>\n<p>The news of Djokovic\u2019s medical exemption sparked outrage in Australia, a country that has seen severe COVID-19 lockdowns over the past year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the Victorian government and Tennis Australia may permit a non-vaccinated player to compete in the Australian Open, it is the Commonwealth government that will enforce our requirements at the Australian border,\u201d Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/tennis\/story\/_\/id\/32997513\/novak-djokovic-needs-prove-exemption-go-home-australian-pm\">said<\/a>. \u201cIf an arriving individual is not vaccinated, they must provide acceptable proof that they cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons to be able to access the same travel arrangement as fully vaccinated travelers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Djokovic will have to prove his medical exemption upon arrival in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf that evidence is insufficient, then he won\u2019t be treated any different to anyone else and he\u2019ll be on the next plane home,\u201d Morrison <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/tennis\/story\/_\/id\/32997513\/novak-djokovic-needs-prove-exemption-go-home-australian-pm\">said<\/a>. \u201cAnd so if medical exemptions had been provided by medical professionals and that\u2019s been furnished to him as a proviso for him to get on that plane, well, that will have to stack up when he arrives in Australia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the nine-time Australian Open champion has not publicly stated his vaccine status, he did test positive for COVID-19 in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Djokovic is coming off a season in which he won three of the four majors, including the 2021 tournament in Melbourne. And yet, it\u2019s been unclear over the past several months whether he would be allowed to enter the 2022 Open because of his vaccination status.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Open requires all players to be vaccinated against COVID-19 or receive a medical exemption.
