Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) proves the Chinese Communist Party\u2019s point that \u201cfreedom of speech\u201d is an illusion, so Americans are hypocrites for criticizing China\u2019s vast censorship apparatus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Rep. Greene\u2019s personal account was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/news\/twitter-permanently-suspends-marjorie-taylor-greenes-personal-account\/\"><span>permanently suspended<\/span><\/a><span> from Twitter on Sunday for \u201crepeated violations of our [Chinese coronavirus] misinformation policy,\u201d according to the company. The tweet that prompted Greene\u2019s suspension included a chart of allegedly high \u201cCovid vaccine deaths\u201d that was based on \u201cunverified data\u201d and drawn in a misleading way. (Photo by Michael Reynolds\/Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>To the <\/span><i><span>Global Times, <\/span><\/i><span>these bans \u2013 plus Twitter\u2019s suspension of Donald Trump\u2019s account when he was the sitting president of the United States \u2013 were proof that America is hypocritical for objecting to China\u2019s supposedly more rational and orderly system of state-imposed censorship:<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cFrom Trump to Greene, the permanent ban on their personal Twitter account indicates that in the US, there is no absolute freedom of speech either. There are clear boundaries on freedom of speech. The voices must conform to laws and regulations and cannot impair national interests,\u201d [China Foreign Affairs University professor Li Haidong] said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But the US has played the old trick of double standards on freedom of speech. Chinese social media platforms\u2019 suspension of some personal accounts, or the closure of some media outlets in Hong Kong such as the Apply Daily comes from the same considerations taken when Twitter banned Trump and Greene \u2013 their contents violated China\u2019s law and regulations and posed potential threats to national security, social stability and normal order.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Ironically, when banning these personal accounts, the US defends its actions with a legitimate explanation; while China adopts similar practices, Washington portrays them as \u201csuppressing speech freedom,\u201d or committing \u201chuman rights violations.\u201d Applying double standards in such a way is despicable.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Opinion?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Opinion<\/a>: When banning personal accounts of Trump and Greene, the US defends it with a legitimate explanation; when China adopts similar practices, the US portrays them as \u201csuppressing speech freedom.\u201d Applying double standards in such a way is despicable. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/crbnJCZHcw\">https:\/\/t.co\/crbnJCZHcw<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Global Times (@globaltimesnews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/globaltimesnews\/status\/1477987274600386561?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 3, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><i><span>Apple Daily <\/span><\/i><span>was the venerable pro-democracy newspaper <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/the-media\/2021\/06\/24\/hundreds-hong-kong-pay-tribute-apple-daily-final-issue-sells-million-copies\/\"><span>smashed<\/span><\/a><span> by the Chinese Communist Party last year, using the totalitarian \u201cnational security law\u201d imposed on Hong Kong in defiance of its guaranteed autonomy. ( AP Photo\/Vincent Yu)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>The <\/span><i><span>Global Times <\/span><\/i><span>found it \u201cironic\u201d that American \u201celites\u201d think there is a difference between censoring Greene for allegedly \u201cspreading factually incorrect and dangerous information\u201d and the Chinese Communist Party silencing anyone who goes against its \u201cdictates.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis is a biased view. All countries have their demands to defend their sovereignty, territorial integrity, national security and interests. But every country also has its own unique political system, social customs and culture. In this context, every country has its own understanding of what kinds of remarks would threaten social stability,\u201d the Party newspaper asserted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The <\/span><i><span>Global Times <\/span><\/i><span>editorial should be a disturbing opportunity for reflection by Americans who support the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/the-media\/2021\/12\/30\/hayward-press-freedom-withered-in-2021-and-western-media-helped-kill-it\/\"><span>privatized system<\/span><\/a><span> of censorship and social credit taking shape in their country. The most oppressive regime on Earth just applauded you for finally agreeing with their point of view about the need for speech controls and the superiority of logical authoritarian rule over messy democracy.
