Rowling\u2019s Harry Potter books are meant to be stand-ins for Jews.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere\u2019s how you know Jews are still where they are,\u201d he said on his <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/DzffpeYnv-w\">Apple TV+ show<\/a> last month. \u201cTalking to people, I say: \u2018You ever see a Harry Potter movie?\u2019 And people are like, \u2018I love the Harry Potter movies!\u2019 And I\u2019m like, \u2018You ever see the scenes in Gringotts Bank?\u2019 And they\u2019re like, \u2018I love the scenes in Gringott\u2019s Bank!\u2019 And I go, \u2018Do you know what those folks who run the bank are?\u2019 And they\u2019re like, \u2018What?\u2019 And I\u2019m like, \u2018Jews!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stewart went on:<\/p>\n<p><em>And I\u2019ll say, \u2018Let me show you this from the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. I just want to show you a caricature.\u2019 And they go, \u2018Oh, look at that, that\u2019s from Harry Potter!\u2019 And you\u2019re like, \u2018No, that\u2019s a caricature of a Jew from an anti-Semitic piece of literature.\u2019 J.K. Rowling was like, \u2018Can we get these guys to run our bank?\u2019 \u2026 It\u2019s a wizarding world \u2026 we can ride dragons, you can have a pet owl \u2026 but who should run the bank? Jews, \u2026 but what if the teeth were sharper?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It was one of those things where I saw it on the screen and I was expecting the crowd to be like, \u2018Holy sh**, she did not, in a wizarding world, just throw Jews in there to run the f***ing underground bank. And everybody was just like, \u2018Wizards.\u2019 It was so weird.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Jewish journalist and political commentator Yascha Maunk expressed doubt about the sincerity of these sudden charges of antisemitic bigotry against Rowling, suggesting that they stem from Hollywood\u2019s displeasure with her views on a separate topic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJ. K. Rowling is not an antisemite. And the ease with which major voices and legacy media outlets are smearing her as one because they dislike her stance on a different issue is truly dystopian,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Yascha_Mounk\/status\/1478763860035354626?s=20\">tweeted<\/a> in apparent reference to the criticism leveled against the author for her recent comments about the transgender movement.<\/p>\n<p>To that point, &nbsp;The Daily Wire\u2019s Ben Shapiro <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/benshapiro\/status\/1478730891094642688?s=20\">pointed out<\/a> that Stewart has never condemned or even criticized the openly anti-semitic comments of his \u201cDaily Show\u201d successor Trevor Noah.<\/p>\n<p>As reported by Israeli newspaper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/jewish\/new-daily-show-host-under-fire-for-anti-semitic-misogynistic-tweets-1.5345060\">Haaretz<\/a>, Noah\u2019s past anti-Jewish comments include:<\/p>\n<p><em>Behind every successful Rap Billionaire is a double as rich Jewish man. #BeatsByDreidel.\u201d<\/em><em>Messi gets the ball and the real players try foul him, but Messi doesn\u2019t go down easy, just like jewish chicks. #ElClasico.\u201d<\/em><em>South Africans know how to recycle like Israel knows how to be peaceful.\u201d<\/em><em>Almost bumped a Jewish kid crossing the road. He didn\u2019t look b4 crossing the road, but I still would hav felt so bad in my german car.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Instead, when Noah\u2019s comments were uncovered, Stewart <a href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/jewish\/new-daily-show-host-under-fire-for-anti-semitic-misogynistic-tweets-1.5345060\">asked<\/a> Comedy Central viewers to give the new host a chance. \u201cI do hope you give him the opportunity to earn that trust and respect,\u201d he said, adding, \u201cMy experience with him is that he is an incredibly thoughtful and considerate and funny and smart individual. I think, you give him that time, and it\u2019s going to be well worth it. I\u2019m excited for where he\u2019s going to take the thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dave Rich, director of policy at Jewish charity the Community Security Trust, echoed Maunk and Shapiro\u2019s views, telling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/jon-stewart-jk-rowling-anti-semitism-harry-potter-1235069688\/\">The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>: \u201cI don\u2019t believe J.K. Rowling is an antisemite or is responsible for creating antisemitic caricatures. There is nothing in her record to suggest that she holds antisemitic views: quite the opposite in fact as she has spoken out consistently and repeatedly in support of the Jewish community and against antisemitism, when there was no need for her to do so. Consequently I think in this case, her goblins are just goblins. Now, we could have a fascinating discussion about whether the traditional depictions of goblins in European culture have been subliminally influenced by antisemitic depictions of Jews (you could do the same for vampires), but that doesn\u2019t make every goblin an antisemitic caricature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Once his comments about Rowling began garnering significant media attention, Stewart backtracked, claiming he did not call Rowling anti-semitic and saying he\u2019s personally a fan of Harry Potter and doesn\u2019t believe Rowling is an anti-Jewish bigot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do not think J.K. Rowling is anti-semitic. I did not accuse her of being anti-semitic,\u201d he said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jonstewart\/status\/1478791577573199875?s=20\">video<\/a> statement posted to Twitter. \u201cI do not think the \u2018Harry Potter\u2019 movies are anti-semitic. I really love the \u2018Harry Potter\u2019 movies, probably too much for a gentleman of my considerable age.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He finished:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI cannot stress this enough. I am not accusing J.K. Rowling of being anti-semitic,\u201d Stewart added. \u201cShe need not answer to any of it. I don\u2019t want the \u2018Harry Potter\u2019 movies censored in any way. It was a lighthearted conversation.
