The situation became serious as many motorists faced dwindling food and water supplies and not enough gas to run their heaters as temperatures remained frigid. Some travelers had young children as passengers. Elderly folks were reporting that they didn\u2019t have essential medications.<\/p>\n<p>Emergency vehicles were mostly unable to reach the trapped vehicles, though some local businesses stepped up to offer shelter, food, and electricity for people to charge their phones. One trucker handed out loaves of bread. But while all this was going on, several late-night hosts used the situation as fodder for their stand-up routine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw that because of a huge winter storm, a 50-mile stretch of I-95 in Virginia was shut down, and drivers were stranded on the Interstate for more than 24 hours,\u201d Jimmy Fallon said on \u201cThe Tonight Show.\u201d He quipped, \u201cMeanwhile, there was a dad sitting there like, \u2018If I could just get over the one lane.\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Fallon had a few other jokes on the traffic jam. \u201cThe only happy person was the cabdriver whose fare got up to $14 million,\u201d Fallon said, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/01\/05\/arts\/television\/stephen-colbert-pandemic-parents-interstate-shutdown.html\">according to<\/a> The New York Times. He also addressed the lack of restroom facilities, saying, \u201cTwenty-four hours in standstill traffic \u2014 I\u2019m pretty sure there\u2019s 50 miles of highway just covered in yellow snow.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLate Show\u201d host Stephen Colbert added his jokes to the conversation too. \u201cRight now, there\u2019s probably no better place on the planet to quarantine than I-95 in Virginia, where cars have been trapped in a traffic jam for nearly 27 hours,\u201d Colbert said. \u201cHoly never-getting-to-Toledo!\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, \u201cLate Late Show\u201d host James Corden took aim at Virginia senator Tim Kaine (D-VA), who had shared on social media that he was one of the people stuck on the highway.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn fact, Virginia Senator Tim Kaine was one of the commuters trapped on the Interstate, causing him to tweet this: \u2018I started my normal 2 hour drive to DC at 1pm yesterday. 19 hours later, I\u2019m still not near the Capitol.\u2019 But his commute wasn\u2019t done. It took him 27 hours to get to work,\u201d Corden said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty-seven hours! The stakes were high too because it only takes 24 hours for anyone to forget who Tim Kaine is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fallon also shared a one-liner about Kaine, who served as the vice presidential candidate alongside Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election. \u201cOne minute you\u2019re about to be vice president of the United States, the next you\u2019re talking about your fluid intake,\u201d Fallon said.<\/p>\n<p>Not everyone was in a joking mood about the messy road situation, however. \u201cMorning Joe\u201d host Joe Scarborough ripped Democratic Virginia Governor Ralph Northam for his handling of the crisis, plus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/i-really-dont-have-any-words-for-the-stupidity-joe-scarborough-flames-gov-northam-for-blaming-hellish-i-95-scene-on-out-of-state-drivers\">criticized him<\/a> for blaming out-of-state drivers for the problem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe question is, what the hell was outgoing Virginia Governor Ralph Northam doing?\u201d Scarborough asked on the show.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really don\u2019t have any words for the stupidity in [Northam\u2019s statement]. I-95 brings people. It\u2019s the artery, the main artery that takes people from Florida all the way up to Maine. People travel I-95,\u201d he continued.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re not used to bumpkins being too stupid to prepare the roads before the snow starts. They\u2019re not used to bumpkins being too stupid to plow the roads in a timely manner. But that\u2019s exactly what happened with Ralph Northam.
