According to the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/education\/philadelphia-schools-union-reopen-20210205.html\"><span>Philadelphia Inquirer<\/span><\/a><span>, the district was expecting 2,000 preschool through second-grade teachers to return to work on Monday in advance of its Feb. 22 reopening date.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>PFT President Jerry Jordan said in a statement that he was \u201cdisgusted\u201d with the school district for planning to reopen schools.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSchool buildings are scheduled to reopen on Monday, and I am unable to assure their safety for reoccupancy,\u201d Jordan<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pft.org\/press\/pft-president-jerry-jordan-calls-intervention-reopening-school-buildings\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cQuite frankly I am disgusted that the District would continue forward with a path towards reopening buildings that again puts my dedicated members in harm\u2019s way, and in just a few short weeks, will put Philadelphia\u2019s children in harm\u2019s way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In a separate statement, Jordan suggested the novel coronavirus is \u201cdeadly\u201d to students. According to the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/hcp\/pediatric-hcp.html\"><span>Center for Disease Control and Prevention<\/span><\/a> <span>(CDC), children are less likely to be infected by the coronavirus and are less likely to develop a severe illness as well.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI don\u2019t need to convince anyone that COVID-19 is deadly,\u201d Jordan said. \u201cAnd I cannot recommend to anyone that the buildings are safe based on the information that we have right now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This morning, I joined <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/solomonjones1?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@solomonjones1<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/onWURD?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#onWURD<\/a> and closed with this: I don&#8217;t need to convince anyone that COVID19 is deadly. Jordan (@jerrytjordan) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jerrytjordan\/status\/1357699273467559939?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 5, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>According to the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/education\/philadelphia-schools-union-reopen-20210205.html\"><span>Philadelphia Inquirer<\/span><\/a><span>, the district\u2019s Chief Talent Officer Larisa Shambaugh emailed teachers telling them they may be subject to disciplinary action if they do not return to work on Monday.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The district has spent $4 million on ventilation updates, including the purchase of window fans for 1,100 classrooms. The state has also prioritized teachers in its ongoing vaccination efforts. Superintendent William Hite Jr. made clear that the return to classroom learning is not conditional on teacher vaccination, though he has advocated for strategies to inoculate as many teachers as possible.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Members of the Philadelphia city council also put out a statement calling on schools to remain closed. The city councilors argued that schools must be newly-renovated to reopen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe know the shameful conditions children have long been expected to endure \u2013 from overcrowded classrooms and cafeterias to flooded bathrooms, stifling temperatures and flaking ceilings. This is what our children endured pre-pandemic and why we have called for a massive investment to modernize and improve our public school buildings,\u201d the statement<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HelenGymAtLarge\/status\/1357763351254867975\"><span>reads<\/span><\/a><span>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Other large school districts across the country are refusing to return to in-person learning as well. The Chicago Teachers Union threatened to strike after the Mayor ordered teachers back to their classrooms.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/chicago-mayor-orders-teachers-back-into-classrooms-union-vows-to-call-a-strike\"><span>The Daily Wire<\/span><\/a> <span>reported:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em><span>Chicago\u2019s Mayor Lori Lightfoot has ordered Chicago\u2019s public school teachers to return to classroom learning this week, ending the school district\u2019s month-long virtual learning system, but the Chicago Teachers UNion say that, if they are forced to return to work, they will call a strike, even though they are currently bound by a contract and such a strike would likely be illegal.&nbsp;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>In an effort to get students and teachers back to the classroom, Lightfoot and the Chicago Public School district threatened to lock teachers out from remote learning.
