The university settled with the group this week before Speech First could push for a Supreme Court review.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/speechfirst.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Final-Illinois-Complaint.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">lawsuit<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">challenged the university&#8217;s Bias Assessment and Response Team, which tracked and published anonymous allegations of bias- or prejudice-related incidents. Some students &#8220;weaponized&#8221; the online bias-incident reporting portal against other students\u2014particularly those who advocated for Israel\u2014according to the lawsuit.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The school\u2019s bias protocols extended to student housing, where students who had allegedly committed a &#8220;bias-motivated incident&#8221; were subject to censure, probation, community service hours, or mandated classes on &#8220;ethical decision making.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Now, students are protected from disciplinary actions from the school\u2019s Bias Assessment and Response Team and can only be punished if their action threatens another student with physical harm or otherwise violates the university&#8217;s student code of conduct.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Speech First founder and president Nicole Neily, who graduated from the University of Illinois, said the new policy changes defend students from the school&#8217;s intimidation tactics.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;These policy changes clarify that the university administration may not intimidate students into silence by accusing them of \u2018bias,'&#8221; Neily told the <em>Washington Free Beacon<\/em>. &#8220;As an alumna, I was particularly dismayed to see an institution that I once loved employing draconian, unconstitutional policies to muzzle speech with which they disagreed\u2014my fellow Illini deserve better, and we are proud that this settlement makes clearer where the school\u2019s authority ends.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Education Department in November<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/campus\/education-dept-launches-investigation-into-anti-semitism-at-university-of-illinois\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">launched<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">an investigation into the university after Jewish student groups brought forward a list of anti-Semitic incidents at the university, including harassment against pro-Israel students and the vandalization of Jewish religious ornaments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 12px auto 6px auto;font-family: Helvetica,Arial,Sans-serif;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;font-weight: normal;font-size: 14px;line-height: normal\"><a style=\"text-decoration: underline\" title=\"View Notice of Dismissal on Scribd\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/493489571\/Notice-of-Dismissal#from_embed\">Notice of Dismissal<\/a><\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<div class=\"my-8 hide-print\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1526555381173-4\" class=\"mobile-250 desktop-90\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Under legal pressure, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign rolled back\u00a0a\u00a0&#8220;bias response&#8221; team\u00a0alleged to have\u00a0intimidated\u00a0pro-Israel students.
