County Department of Public Health\u2026 officials on local conditions and any changes to public health orders and guidance during this winter surge,\u201d Taylor said in a statement. \u201cFor the second consecutive winter, holiday gatherings have fueled widespread community transmission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The news came a day <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2022-01-04\/federal-jury-trials-suspended-omicron-coronavirus-covid\">after a panel of judges ordered the suspension of all federal trials<\/a> in Los Angeles, Riverside and Orange counties. There was no timetable given for a return to normal operations in the federal court system.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The variant is spreading rapidly in California despite the fact that the state has some of the most restrictive policies in the country, including a statewide indoor mask mandate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/health\/2021\/12\/17\/californians-are-ignoring-gavin-newsoms-statewide-mask-mandate\/\">imposed<\/a> by Governor Gavin Newsom last month.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The test positivity rate in the state <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2022-01-04\/california-coronavirus-cases-reach-record-high\">reached<\/a> a seven-day average of 20.4%, the highest of the pandemic thus far, with an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/health\/article\/Bay-Area-and-California-mark-record-high-spike-in-16749080.php\">average<\/a> of 59,000 new cases daily since New Year\u2019s Eve \u2014 double the number experienced during last year\u2019s winter surge in parts of the state, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2022-01-04\/l-a-county-suspends-criminal-trials-for-two-weeks-amid-omicron-surge\">nearly<\/a> three times as high in L.A. County.<\/p>\n<p>In Orange County, Deputy District Attorney Kelly Ernby, who opposed vaccine mandates and was also apparently unvaccinated, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ocregister.com\/2022\/01\/04\/husband-kelly-ernby-wasnt-vaccinated-when-she-died-of-covid-19-complications\/\">passed away<\/a> recently from the coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>Further north, in San Francisco, hundreds of teachers and teachers\u2019 aides were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/sf\/article\/Unprecedented-More-than-600-S-F-teachers-16749688.php\">absent<\/a> due to the coronavirus as classes resumed this week, and hundreds of students in the broader Bay Area <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/2022\/01\/04\/covid-tests-find-hundreds-of-bay-area-students-infected-before-return-to-class\/\">tested<\/a> positive, preventing their return to school.<\/p>\n<p><em>Joel B.
