In September of that year, a socialist identified as&nbsp;Adelio Bispo de Oliveira ran up to Bolsonaro during a campaign event and stabbed him in the abdomen, leaving him clinging to life. As the attack occurred during a highly publicized event, Bispo de Oliveira was caught on video.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Warning \u2013 graphic:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Brazilian Presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro stabbed while campaigning in Minas Gerais, Brazil <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/mykSLhZgqx\">pic.twitter.com\/mykSLhZgqx<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Thwaiterick (@Andergran) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Andergran\/status\/1037828133020418053?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 6, 2018<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Bolsonaro\u2019s attacker, a former member of the Socialism and Liberty Party (PSOL),&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/latin-america\/2018\/09\/07\/brazil-assassin-longtime-socialist-ordered-god-kill\/\">told<\/a> police that he had been \u201ccommanded by God\u201d to kill Bolsonaro.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The attack resulted in life-long health problems for Bolsonaro as it significantly damaged his intestines, making him unable to process certain foods properly. The president has been hospitalized on multiple occasions throughout his term. He faces re-election this year.<\/p>\n<p>Bolsonaro published a photo on his social media accounts from the hospital on Monday, explaining that he began to feel sick on Sunday afternoon and that, depending on the cause of the pain, he may have to endure another surgery. Doctors initially diagnosed Bolsonaro with an intestinal blockage, a recurring problem for the president in parts of his intestinal tract that were destroyed in the stabbing. He has undergone surgery six times to rebuild his intestines since the 2018 attack. Bolsonaro <a href=\"https:\/\/www.terra.com.br\/noticias\/brasil\/politica\/jair-bolsonaro-usa-tiktok-para-compartilhar-foto-em-hospital,2493f477ade2927f3c3897573ba4a4f6k5tpfplg.html\">posted<\/a> a video on the Chinese-owned social media outlet Tiktok on Tuesday showing his doctor, Antonio Luiz Macedo, treating him. First Lady Michelle Bolsonaro also posted a photo on her social media accounts of the president walking down one of the hospital\u2019s hallways, showing some apparent improvement in his condition. Doctors have updated that Bolsonaro is currently on a liquid diet.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Flavio Bolsonaro of Rio de Janeiro, the president\u2019s son, said on Tuesday that the elder Bolsonaro will face dietary restrictions for the rest of his life, complicated by the fact that a president\u2019s schedule often does not allow for a rigid meal routine.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThings happen in a dynamic manner and he needs to keep changing his schedule, which makes it difficult to have breakfast, lunch, eat at night,\u201d Bolsonaro <a href=\"https:\/\/politica.estadao.com.br\/noticias\/geral,jair-bolsonaro-flavio-restricao-alimentar-restaurante-rui,70003941491\">explained<\/a>. The senator added that his father no longer \u201chas the luxury of doing many things he would like,\u201d like eating cake, pizza, or strip steak.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the Sao Paulo newspaper&nbsp;<em>Estadao<\/em>, intestinal medicine expert Dr. Marcelo Borba explained that much of the problem comes from scarring within the intestine in places where surgeons initially repaired the damage from the stabbing.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cHe has these abrasions because he was very manipulated previously with inter-abdominal surgeries,\u201d Borba told the newspaper. \u201cIn these cases, one has to keep a certain diet, for example, avoid food that can ferment, like milk, or that is too fibrous and difficult to digest, for example, vegetables and legumes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Borba noted that avoiding any further surgeries was key because these would create more scarring that makes it more difficult to pass food.<\/p>\n<p>As with the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/youwouldknow\/status\/1415386060763373568\">last time<\/a> Bolsonaro was <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/orridge_anna\/status\/1415629837075628037\">hospitalized<\/a>, in July, leftists online immediately began using his medical condition to attack him. In 2018, however, Bolsonaro <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/latin-america\/2018\/10\/03\/brazil-conservative-frontrunner-gaining-support-from-socialist-voter-base\/\">managed<\/a> to pry away a significant amount of support from Haddad\u2019s Workers\u2019 Party (PT) in the region, clinching the election. Haddad was a last-minute replacement for Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva, a former socialist president and founder of the PT who had intended to run before being convicted on corruption charges shortly before the election, disqualifying him from running again.<\/p>\n<p>Since the 2018 election, the Brazilian Supreme Federal Tribunal (STF) \u2013 packed with Lula appointees \u2013 invalidated Lula\u2019s conviction.
