Press releases about arrests will no longer contain mugshots.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe law also targets a number of&nbsp;\u2018publish-for-pay\u2019&nbsp;publications, usually websites or periodicals that display mugshots and charge fees for their removal. It has now taken effect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The law was sponsored by representatives Janelle&nbsp;Bynum, D-Clackamas, and Brad&nbsp;Witt, D-Clatskanie. Bynum <a href=\"https:\/\/www.registerguard.com\/story\/news\/crime\/2021\/12\/30\/oregon-law-mugshot-release-2022-faq-booking-photo\/9046406002\/\">stated<\/a>, \u201cThe day someone gets arrested can quite frankly be one the worst days of their lives. Those mugshots are sometimes of people in a mental health crisis. Those photos that are published can ruin a person\u2019s life who has not yet been found guilty of any crime. They can linger on and impact people\u2019s lives for years to come. We can do better for them and for others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>California also has a new law affecting mugshots: AB 1475 bans social media mugshots from being posted on social media sites. \u201cIt limits what they\u2019re allowed to post there to better protect the rights of people who have been arrested but have not yet been prosecuted. The law forbids law enforcement from posting mug shots of people arrested on suspicion of nonviolent crimes. There are some exceptions for cases where there is an imminent threat to public safety,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/southtahoenow.com\/story\/01\/01\/2022\/new-california-and-nevada-laws-2022\">South Tahoe Now<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>Mountain View Voice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mv-voice.com\/news\/2021\/07\/27\/new-california-law-prohibits-law-enforcement-from-posting-mugshots-on-social-media\">added<\/a>, \u201cAB 1475 has some exceptions. Along with violent crimes, police can post mugshots on social media if the suspect is a fugitive or an imminent threat to public safety, or if the photo could help locate and detain the suspect.
