What elite liberals lack in factual knowledge, reasoned discourse, or a track record of success, they more than make up for in the absolute, unquestioned assumption that their policies are right \u2014 that they will \u201cbend the arc of history toward justice\u201d \u2014 and therefore, they must be implemented regardless of what America\u2019s unenlightened citizenry desires. That\u2019s why, unlike Republicans, when Democrats are in power they force their agenda on the American people relentlessly. Here are a few such examples:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Passing the \u201cAffordable Care Act\u201d (Obamacare)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Left\u2019s greatest stride toward establishing national health care in the United States came with the 2010 passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), commonly called \u201cObamacare.\u201d The American people did everything they could to signal their opposition to the bill from the outset. Polls show that <a href=\"https:\/\/elections.huffingtonpost.com\/pollster\/us-health-bill\">support for Obamacare never topped 50%<\/a>, and more Americans opposed than supported Obamacare from August 2009 until after the 2016 election.<\/p>\n<p>The American people\u2019s repudiation only emboldened Democrats, who openly touted their intentions to ram the bill down the nation\u2019s throat like a liberal, legislative tongue depressor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to pass health care reform,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Se--vFCx-fs\">said<\/a> Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) on January 28, 2010. \u201cWe\u2019ll go through the gate. If the gate\u2019s closed, we\u2019ll go over the fence. If the fence is too high, we\u2019ll pole vault in. If that doesn\u2019t work, we\u2019ll parachute in. But we\u2019re going to get health care reform passed.\u201d<\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<p>The ACA began its path toward becoming law after it passed the Senate \u2014 which is a problem in itself, since the Constitution <a href=\"https:\/\/constitution.congress.gov\/browse\/essay\/artI_S7_C1_1_1\/\">requires<\/a> that all spending bills originate in the House of Representatives (Article I, Section 7). The Founding Fathers believed taxes should be raised by the body most accountable to the people. Senate Democrats got over this barrier, because then-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid took an unrelated bill that <em>had<\/em> passed the House (H.R. 3590, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.govinfo.gov\/content\/pkg\/BILLS-111hr3590eh\/pdf\/BILLS-111hr3590eh.pdf\">six-page bill<\/a> to give military members a tax break), <a href=\"http:\/\/housedocs.house.gov\/rules\/hr4872\/111_hr3590_engrossed.pdf\">stripped out everything<\/a> except its bill number, and inserted the entire text of the <a href=\"http:\/\/housedocs.house.gov\/rules\/hr4872\/111_hr3590_engrossed.pdf\">2,407-page Obamacare bill<\/a> in its place. Suddenly, a Senate bill \u201coriginated\u201d in the House.<\/p>\n<p>To pull the bill over the finish line, Reid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2009\/12\/payoffs-for-states-get-reid-to-60-030815\">handed out a host of pork barrel spending<\/a> to coerce reluctant Democrats. His infamous bribe for then-Senator Ben Nelson (D-NE), the \u201cCornhusker kickback,\u201d assured that the state of Nebraska would never have to pay for the cost of Medicaid expansion, unlike the other 49 states. (The House later <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/blog-briefing-room\/news\/82621-obama-healthcare-plan-nixes-ben-nelsons-cornhusker-kickback-deal\">removed Nelson\u2019s bribe<\/a> from the final bill.)<\/p>\n<p>The Senate passed the bill on Christmas Eve 2009, by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.senate.gov\/legislative\/LIS\/roll_call_lists\/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=111&amp;session=1&amp;vote=00396\">60-39 party line vote<\/a>, and went to the House, where it \u201coriginated.\u201d The House wanted to amend the Senate version of Obamacare, but Pelosi knew their bill couldn\u2019t pass the Senate: Democrats lost their filibuster-proof majority when <a href=\"https:\/\/therightswriter.com\/2008\/05\/kennedys-illness-and-the-lefts\/\">Senator Ted Kennedy died<\/a>, and Massachusetts voters replaced him with a Republican who <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/GMA\/scott-brown-defeat-coakley-means-obama\/story?id=9609602\">campaigned<\/a> against Obamacare.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than heed the Democratic voters of Massachusetts, the House came up with a plan: The House passed the Senate version of the bill, then passed the amendments they wanted in a <em>separate <\/em>bill (the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010) \u2014 and enacted <em>that <\/em>bill through a process called reconciliation. Congress created reconciliation <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.humanevents.com\/2009\/09\/22\/your-guide-to-budget-reconciliation-and-obamacare\/\">in 1974<\/a> to deal with budget issues; it had never been intended to pass a massive social welfare state program like Obamacare. But reconciliation had what Nancy Pelosi needed: \u201cInstead of needing 60 votes, a reconciliation bill only needs a simple majority in the Senate,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/budget.house.gov\/publications\/fact-sheet\/budget-reconciliation-basics\">explains<\/a> the House Budget Committee. Reconciliation bills \u201ccannot be stalled in the Senate by filibuster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, the Democrats rammed through a bill opposed by most Americans, including the deep-blue state of Massachusetts, employing multiple legislative illusions.<\/p>\n<p>Obamacare is unconstitutional on multiple fronts, not least because the federal government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2009\/12\/09\/the-individual-mandate-in-obamacare-is-unconstitutional\/\">cannot compel U.S. citizens to purchase anything<\/a>, including health insurance. In 2012, Chief Justice John Roberts came in with an assist, siding with the Supreme Court\u2019s liberal bloc by rebranding the \u201cindividual mandate\u201d as a tax. As this author has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/7-ways-democrats-would-raise-taxes-on-people-making-less-than-400000\">reported<\/a> at The Daily Wire:<\/p>\n<p><em>The ACA, conventionally known as Obamacare, punitively fines anyone who fails to purchase a qualified health insurance plan $695 for a single person or as much as $2,085 for a family of four. Chief Justice John Roberts famously&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/opinions\/11pdf\/11-393c3a2.pdf\"><em>defined this penalty as a tax<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;in the Supreme Court ruling that saved Obamacare from being overturned [<\/em>NFIB v. Sebelius<em>].&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Since that time, Americans have had to bear the burden of the Left\u2019s intransigence. Health insurance premiums in the individual market have more than doubled since the advent of Obamacare, rising by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/health-care-reform\/report\/obamacare-has-doubled-the-cost-individual-health-insurance\">129%<\/a> between 2013 and 2019.
