They assessed all applications to see if they met the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) guidelines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Djokovic confirmed the news on social media, saying he\u2019s \u201cheading Down Under\u201d on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHappy New Year! The requirement also applies to fans and staff attending the tournament.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFair and independent protocols were established for assessing medical exemption applications that will enable us to ensure Australian Open 2022 is safe and enjoyable for everyone,\u201d tournament director Craig Tiley <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BenRothenberg\/status\/1478329044156309505?s=20\">said<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCentral to this process was that the decisions were made by independent medical experts and that every applicant was given due consideration,\u201d Tiley <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BenRothenberg\/status\/1478329044156309505?s=20\">continued<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The nine-time Australian Open champion&nbsp;is coming off a season in which Djokovic won three of the four majors, including the 2021 tournament in Melbourne. And yet, it\u2019s been unclear over the past several months whether he would be allowed to enter the 2022 Open because of his vaccination status.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI won\u2019t disclose whether I am vaccinated or not,\u201d Djokovic <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ozmo_sasa\/status\/1450177884367343619?s=20\">told<\/a> Sasa Ozmo in October.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToo many people allow themselves the freedom to ask and then to judge,\u201d he continued. \u201cWhatever you say \u2014 I have, I have not, maybe, I do not know or I am thinking about it \u2014 they will use it against you. There is excessive speculation, from the media as well, which bothers me a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of Djokovic\u2019s main rivals through the years \u2014 Rafael Nadal \u2014 will also be competing in the Australian Open, and called those that remain unvaccinated \u201ca bit selfish.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand that there are people who do not want to be vaccinated, but it seems a bit selfish to me,\u201d the 20-time Grand Slam champion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennisworldusa.org\/tennis\/news\/Rafael_Nadal\/104896\/rafael-nadal-bit-selfish-to-refuse-to-take-vaccine-\/\">said<\/a> in November. \u201cWe have suffered a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not know 100 percent the effects of vaccines, but we do have to trust the doctors\u2026 we do know the effect of the virus if we are not vaccinated.
