Brian Babin (R-Texas) filed\u00a0an amendment late Tuesday (<a href=\"https:\/\/amendments-rules.house.gov\/amendments\/BABIN_005_xml%20(2)0202211323362336.pdf\">pdf<\/a>) that would instead eject Omar from the Committee on Foreign Affairs, rather than Greene from the Committee on the Budget. In advancing the amendment, Babin cited anti-Semitic remarks Omar had made.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the Democrat Majority wants to go down this road, they should start by dealing with their own members who have been at this before and AFTER their election to Congress,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepBrianBabin\/status\/1356759394084651010?s=20\">wrote on Twitter<\/a>, suggesting Democrats were employing a double standard by punishing Greene while downplaying misconduct within their own ranks.<\/p>\n<p>Omar was accused of anti-Semitism after she made remarks critical of Israel and alleged the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) was paying off politicians to take pro-Israel positions. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) reprimanded Omar, who later apologized for her remarks, although she retained her committee assignments.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3516835\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/rep-ilhan-omar-1200x861-1.jpg\" alt=\"Epoch Times Photo\" width=\"640\" height=\"459\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) called Babin\u2019s effort to oust Omar instead of Greene \u201cunbelievable\u201d and criticized him for \u201cfalse equivalence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Omar <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jason_donner\/status\/1357385466639757313?s=20\">called\u00a0Babin\u2019s bid<\/a> to cut her committee assignments \u201ca ridiculous distraction. Obviously, we can see it is a racist, Islamophobic-fueled smear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Babin\u2019s amendment failed, and the House voted 230\u2013199 to adopt the Democratic-backed resolution to censure Greene.<\/p>\n<p>One of the handful of Republicans who voted to strip Greene of her committee assignments, Rep.\u00a0Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.) noted that he had previously called for similar action against Omar.<\/p>\n<p>Diaz-Balart <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MarioDB\/status\/1357478433140449295?s=20\">said on Twitter<\/a> that, while he viewed Greene\u2019s remarks as \u201cunacceptable,\u201d he said there were \u201calso members I\u2019ve consistently said should be removed from committee assignments for their irresponsible, inflammatory speech.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Ilhan Omar continuously made anti-Semitic comments about Israel, Nancy Pelosi swept it under the rug and suggested that they \u2018move forward.\u2019 Why wasn\u2019t she removed from her role on a committee that helps set U.S. policy toward Israel?\u201d Diaz-Balart wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Republican leadership in the House opposed the vote to strip Greene of her assignments, and similarly called out Democrats for a double standard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would remind the majority that several of their own members have engaged in activities or made comments that Republican members find offensive and inappropriate,\u201d\u00a0Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.) said on the House floor Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the majority changes hands in the future, as it surely will at some point, how would the current majority feel if these members are stripped of their committee assignments with no due process?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>Cole also objected to the fact that Greene was not \u201cgiven the courtesy of a referral to the Ethics Committee,\u201d which is the Congressional body empowered to investigate misconduct by representatives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s not being given the same due process that was given to others before facing punishment by the House,\u201d he said, adding that punishing lawmakers for comments made before they assumed office could set a dangerous precedent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy friends run the risk of setting off a tit-for-tat exchange for partisan punishment that could cripple the operation of the House now and well into the future,\u201d Cole said, adding, \u201cI truly believe that the majority claiming a new right to be able to exercise a veto over minority committee assignments will ultimately be dangerous for this institution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McGovern responded to Cole\u2019s remarks by saying that in the past, members were removed from committees due to the wishes of party leaders, but \u201cin this case, it seems very obvious to us the Republican leadership chose not to act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republicans met on Wednesday to consider whether Greene should be removed from the committees, but opted not to.\u00a0House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) condemned Greene\u2019s comments but declined to take further steps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPast comments from and endorsed by Marjorie Taylor Greene on school shootings, political violence, and anti-Semitic conspiracy theories do not represent the values or beliefs of the House Republican Conference,\u201d McCarthy said after the meeting, adding that Greene had apologized for her comments.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy size-large wp-image-3631867\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/themes\/eet\/images\/white.png\" alt=\"Epoch Times Photo\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Kevin-Mccarthy-speaks-1200x800-1.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3631867\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Kevin-Mccarthy-speaks-1200x800-1.jpg\" alt=\"Epoch Times Photo\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p>House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) speaks at the weekly news conference on Capitol Hill in Washington on Dec. 3, 2020. (Tasos Katopodis\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>McGovern also addressed the matter of an Ethics Committee referral, saying that, since Republicans have not yet appointed members to it in this session of Congress, \u201cit doesn\u2019t function at this particular point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Greene, a first-term lawmaker who supports former President Donald Trump, hours before the vote\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/marjorie-taylor-greene-past-statements-on-9-11-school-shootings-do-not-represent-her_3685336.html\">took time to clarify<\/a> some of her past comments and actions. She said that her statements\u00a0about school shootings and the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks do not reflect her views today.<\/p>\n<p>Media outlets and Democrats have also accused Greene of being a supporter of QAnon. Its proponents, who\u00a0follow clues from cryptic messages posted to anonymous imageboards, allege that\u00a0some of the most powerful people in the world are part of a cabal of Satan-worshipping pedophiles and cannibals who have engaged in child sex trafficking and ritual abuse.<\/p>\n<p>Reports also claimed that Greene had \u201cliked\u201d a Facebook comment suggesting that \u201ca bullet to the head\u201d of Pelosi \u201cwould be quicker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/pelosi-in-washington-1200x800-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy size-large wp-image-3663941\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/themes\/eet\/images\/white.png\" alt=\"pelosi\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/pelosi-in-washington-1200x800-1.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3663941\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/pelosi-in-washington-1200x800-1.jpg\" alt=\"pelosi\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p>House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is seen in Washington on Jan. 15, 2021. (Samuel Corum\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Greene, in her speech on the House floor, said that the statements she made \u201cwere words of the past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was allowed to believe things that weren\u2019t true, and I would ask questions about them and I would talk about them, and that is absolutely what I regret,\u201d Greene said, adding that she stopped supporting QAnon in 2018.\u00a0Greene added that she is a \u201cvery regular American\u201d who entered politics after Trump ran for office in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Greene said on Twitter that\u00a0Democrats\u00a0were engaged in a \u201cmob cancel campaign\u201d and that mainstream media outlets were refusing to air her rebuttals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are only set out to destroy Republicans, your jobs, our economy, your children\u2019s education and lives, steal our freedoms, and erase God\u2019s creation,\u201d she\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mtgreenee?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Greene called for election integrity in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election. After the Jan. 20 inauguration of President Joe Biden, Greene <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/articles-of-impeachment-filed-against-biden-by-gop-rep-marjorie-taylor-greene_3666731.html\">filed articles of impeachment<\/a> against him.<\/p>\n<p>The last congressperson to be stripped of their committee assignment was Republican congressman Steve King in 2019 after he was questioned during a media interview why white supremacy is considered offensive.
