There are 210 other Tesla stores across China, plus a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/tesla-invest-188-mln-expand-shanghai-factory-capacity-beijing-daily-2021-11-26\/#:~:text=Tesla&#039;s%20Shanghai%20factory%20was%20designed,450%2C000%20total%20units%20a%20year.&amp;text=Last%20month%2C%20Tesla%20said%20it,Shanghai%20to%20store%20data%20locally.\"><span>factory and R&amp;D center<\/span><\/a><span> in Shanghai. (Photo by Xiaolu Chu\/Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>The <\/span><i><span>Wall Street Journal<\/span><\/i> <span>(<em>WSJ<\/em>) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/tesla-opens-showroom-in-chinas-xinjiang-region-at-center-of-u-s-genocide-allegations-11641214630\">found<\/a> no mention of China\u2019s human rights abuses in Tesla\u2019s upbeat grand opening for its Urumqi location:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cOn the last day of 2021, we meet in Xinjiang. In 2022, let us together launch Xinjiang on its electric journey!\u201d Tesla wrote in the post, which was accompanied by pictures from an opening ceremony that included traditional Chinese lion dances and people posing with placards reading \u201cTesla (heart) Xinjiang.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Tesla\u2019s China-based spokesperson couldn\u2019t be reached for comment on a public holiday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Widely admired in China, Tesla has expanded rapidly in the world\u2019s most populous country. (Photo by STR\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Walmart was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/12\/31\/china-warns-walmart-and-sams-club-over-xinjiang-sourced-products.html\"><span>savaged<\/span><\/a><span> by Chinese social media users for pulling products made with Xinjiang from its shelves, while Intel was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2021\/12\/23\/genocide-olympics-sponsor-intel-apologizes-to-china-for-opposing-slavery\/\"><span>forced<\/span><\/a><span> to apologize<\/span><span> under pressure from the Chinese Communist Party for asking its suppliers to avoid sourcing products from Xinjiang.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>On the other hand, Tesla and other U.S. companies that insist on doing business in Xinjiang could run afoul of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2021\/12\/17\/congress-passes-bill-banning-chinas-uyghur-slave-products-sending-it-to-biden\/\"><span>Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act<\/span><\/a><span>, a recently-passed U.S. law that bans imports from Xinjiang unless companies can prove the products were not made with forced labor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>President Scott Paul of the Alliance for American Manufacturing criticized the Tesla opening in a statement emailed to media outlets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI\u2019ll be blunt: Any company doing business in Xinjiang is complicit in the cultural genocide taking place there. But Tesla\u2019s actions are especially despicable,\u201d Paul <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-01-03\/tesla-opens-showroom-in-xinjiang-contentious-region-of-china\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhat is Tesla thinking, choosing to open a showroom in Xinjiang as the Chinese government, through its mass detention and persecution, is committing crimes against humanity there against Uyghur\/Turkic Muslims?\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KenRoth\/status\/1478044617178238976\"><span>asked<\/span><\/a><span> Human Rights Watch executive director Kenneth Roth on Monday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There is not much evidence that Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/elizahaverstock\/2021\/10\/26\/elon-musk-nearing-300-billion-fortune-is-the-richest-person-in-history\/?sh=3f15ac331933\">wealthiest person in human history<\/a>, thinks about the Uyghur genocide at all.
