The other vacancy besides Nunes is the seat of late Democratic Congressman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-democrat-congressman-alcee-hastings-dies-at-84\">Alcee Hastings<\/a>, who passed away in April of 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Nunes previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-republican-devin-nunes-is-retiring-from-congress\">announced<\/a> in December that he would be resigning from Congress to fill a senior role at the Trump Media &amp; Technology Group, a media enterprise launched by former President Donald Trump. The Hill reports that Nunes will become the CEO of the organization.<\/p>\n<p>Nunes\u2019s resignation also portends a massive change in the leadership of the Republican Party. The Daily Wire reported that Nunes was in line to assume the chairmanship of the House Ways and Means Committee in the event of a Republican takeover of the House after the 2022 midterm elections.<\/p>\n<p>Nunes was one of the most prominent figures in the Russia collusion probe, most notably for his role in analyzing the credibility of the Democrat-funded Steele dossier. Even the Washington Post was forced to admit that Nunes\u2019s 2019 memo about the dossier was significantly more accurate than the memo written by Adam Schiff and House Democrats. The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/fact-check-republicans-famous-memo-on-fisa-abuse-blasted-by-democrats-ended-up-getting-it-mostly-right\">reported at the time<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>Now that Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz has finally released his much-anticipated report on alleged misconduct by the FBI during the 2016 election, two famous memos \u2014 one released by Republican Rep. Devin Nunes while he was House Intelligence Committee chairman, and Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff, who has since taken over the position \u2014 have come under renewed scrutiny. The memos presented dueling versions of how the FBI began to surveil Trump campaign adviser Carter Page in an effort to investigate alleged \u201ccollusion\u201d with Russia.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>So who had it right? A fact-checker for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2019\/12\/13\/vindication-nunes-memo\/\">The&nbsp;Washington Post<\/a>&nbsp;has been forced to admit that Nunes got a \u201cfair amount\u201d right&nbsp;\u2014 in fact, his version of events aligned far more closely with what Horowitz found than the Democrats\u2019 rebuttal.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c[H]ow much is the Nunes memo itself vindicated?\u201d The Washington Post\u2019s Aaron Blake asks in a fact-check published Friday. \u201cA fair amound, it turns out,\u201d writes Blake, adding in an attempt at a qualifier \u201cat least, in Horowitz\u2019s estimation.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Blake then walks through the parallel passages in each memo and compares them with what Horowitz\u2019s extensive report concludes, beginning with the most important disagreement between the two: \u201chow accurate and complete the four [Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA)] applications to surveil Page were.\u201d It turns out that Nunes\u2019 claims aligned more closely with what took place, while Schiff\u2019s counter featured \u201cprobably the worst line of the Democrats\u2019 rebuttal\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy color-gray-darkest ma-0 pad-bottom-md undefined\"><em>Another key claim made in Nunes\u2019 memo is that the Democrat-funded dossier by Christopher Steele was \u201can essential part of the Carter Page FISA application.\u201d The Democrats countered by claiming that the FBI \u201cmade only narrow use\u201d of the notorious, unverified and salacious Steele dossier:<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy color-gray-darkest ma-0 pad-bottom-md undefined\"><em>While Blake describes the differences here as \u201cnuanced,\u201d the language in Horowitz\u2019 report is clear enough: Nunes\u2019 once again presents a more accurate description of events than the Democrats\u2019.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy color-gray-darkest ma-0 pad-bottom-md undefined\"><em>A third key disagreement: whether the FBI was transparent about the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton\u2019s role in funding the Steele dossier:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>While the Democrats\u2019 note is accurate, it fails to take into account that the ties to the DNC and Clinton were omitted in later applications despite the FBI having by then learned about the connection.
