It\u2019s the second leading cause of preventable death, after smoking. With Covid-19, it becomes even more dangerous. One study found that 30% of Covid-19 hospitalizations were in people with obesity.<\/p>\n<p>The obesity clinic where Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford works in Boston has a 1,000-plus person wait list that grew a lot longer with the pandemic. Even with more than a dozen specialists on staff, it\u2019s not enough to meet the demand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are overwhelmed with the volume of patients that have really made that connection between obesity and Covid and the need for them to get appropriate care,\u201d said Cody Stanford, who is also an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School.<\/p>\n<p>The study also noted that people who were <a href=\"https:\/\/dailywire.com\/news\/covid-19-proves-the-danger-of-the-body-positive-celebration-of-obesity\/\">obese<\/a> were potentially at <a href=\"https:\/\/dailywire.com\/news\/whole-foods-ceo-blasted-for-condemning-american-obesity-linking-it-to-covid-19-deaths\/\">greater risk<\/a> to contract the virus in the first place. Additionally, \u201cit found that they are also more at risk of getting really sick, facing a 113% higher chance of being hospitalized, a 74% higher risk of needing to be treated in the ICU and \u2014 perhaps most troubling of all \u2014 a 48% increased risk of death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The risk, according to the article, increases as Body Mass Index goes up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYOU DON\u2019T SAY?????\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BridgetPhetasy\/status\/1478077033859072003\">Bridget Phetasy<\/a> replied.<\/p>\n<p>Some noted that, early on in the pandemic, gyms had been forced to close and people had been told to stay inside their homes \u2014 a factor that could have contributed to weight gain in many cases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we all agree and insist that gyms are essential services. Stay fit, stay strong and stay healthy,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/John_Kavanagh\/status\/1478075405454163976\">John Kavanagh<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank God we shut down the gyms\u2026,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NateOnTheHill\/status\/1478059542286065668\">Nate Madden<\/a> \u2014 communications director for Congressman Chip Roy (R-TX) added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNearly half of Americans gained weight during the lockdowns, with an average gain of 29 pounds. 10% gained 50lbs or more. By closing things down, we actually may have *increased* the risk.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=\u201cNearly%20half%20of%20Americans%20gained%20weight%20during%20the%20lockdowns%2C%20with%20an%20average%20gain%20of%2029%20pounds.%2010%25%20gained%2050lbs%20or%20more.%20By%20closing%20things%20down%2C%20we%20actually%20may%20have%20*increased*%20the%20risk.\u201d&amp;src=typed_query\">CNBC\u2019s<\/a>&nbsp;Brian Sullivan said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/greg_price11\/status\/1478060827521519621\">Greg Price<\/a> noted that Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) had received a \u201cstrike\u201d for promoting \u201cmisinformation\u201d on Twitter when she had tweeted that Covid-19 vaccines vaccines \u201cshould not be forced on our military for a virus that is not dangerous for non-obese people and those under 65.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the covid misinformation \u2018strikes\u2019 that got MTG banned from Twitter was a tweet saying that covid is more dangerous for people who are obese,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Republicans on the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JudiciaryGOP\/status\/1478056299602534412\">House Judiciary Committee<\/a> noticed that as well, adding, \u201cCongresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene tweeted this.
