Sicknick, who died the night following the breach of the Capitol, CNN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/02\/02\/politics\/brian-sicknick-charges\/index.html\">reported<\/a> Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators are \u201cvexed by a lack of evidence that could prove someone caused his death as he defended the Capitol during last month\u2019s insurrection,\u201d the&nbsp;report said.<\/p>\n<p>Law&nbsp;enforcement sources at CNN said that reviewed video and photographs of the&nbsp;breach show&nbsp;Officer&nbsp;Sicknick engaging with rioters, but authorities \u201chave yet to identify a moment in which he suffered his fatal injuries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Citing another law enforcement official, CNN said medical examiners have not found \u201csigns that the officer sustained any blunt force trauma,\u201d leading investigators to believe early reports about Sicknick being struck with a fire&nbsp;extinguisher to be untrue.<\/p>\n<p>A statement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscp.gov\/media-center\/press-releases\/loss-uscp-colleague-brian-d-sicknick\">released<\/a> immediately following the officer\u2019s death from Capitol Police said Sicknick was&nbsp;\u201cinjured while physically engaging with protesters\u201d during the breach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt approximately 9:30 p.m. this evening (January 7, 2021), United States Capitol Police Officer Brian D. Sicknick passed away due to injuries sustained while on-duty,\u201d the press release said. \u201cOfficer Sicknick was responding to the riots on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, at the U.S. Capitol and was injured while physically engaging with protesters. He returned to his division office and collapsed. He was taken to a local hospital&nbsp;where he succumbed to his injuries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As&nbsp;noted by CNN, it remains unknown what caused Sicknick to collapse the night of the breach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne possibility being considered by investigators is that Sicknick became ill after interacting with a chemical irritant like pepper spray or bear spray that was deployed in the crowd,\u201d the&nbsp;report outlined. \u201cBut investigators reviewing video of the officer\u2019s time around the Capitol haven\u2019t been able to confirm that in tape that has been recovered so far, the official said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It also remains unclear if Sicknick had a preexisting medical condition.<\/p>\n<p>Autopsy findings from D.C.\u2019s medical examiner remain undisclosed.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Caroline Behringer, a former staffer who worked for Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), said Sicknick was a Trump supporter who traded political barbs with her and embraced her the day after President Trump won the 2016 election.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><em>\u201cAs the 2016 election neared, Behringer said she and Sicknick, a supporter of the then-candidate Donald Trump, traded barbs and joked whether he would prevail over the Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2021\/01\/08\/capitol-police-officer-brian-sicknick-who-died-veteran-war-critic\/6595549002\/\">reported<\/a> USA Today.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><em>\u201cWe would kind of trade jabs about who was going to win and kind of make fun of each other for our sides being in the lead,\u201d the former Pelosi staffer recalled.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><em>\u201cThe day after the election, Nov. 9, 2016, Behringer recalled being devastated by the outcome and struggling to face the day as she approached the Capitol Building,\u201d the report said. \u201cAs she walked up, the doors had been thrown open by two other officers, a request made by Sicknick when he saw her approaching.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><em>\u201cI collapsed into him in tears and I knew he was a Trump supporter \u2013&nbsp;he was an outspoken Trump supporter \u2013&nbsp;and he put that aside in that moment to comfort a friend and it was a small gesture of kindness, but one that has always stuck with me,\u201d said Behringer.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/capitol-police-officer-who-died-during-capitol-riot-to-lie-in-honor-in-rotunda\">Sicknick<\/a>&nbsp;lies in honor in the Capitol Rotunda.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/officer-who-died-from-injuries-protecting-capitol-was-a-trump-supporter\">Officer Who Died From Injuries Protecting Capitol Was A Trump&nbsp;Supporter<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><span>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
