\/><\/div>\n<p class=\"subheading\">A former president of the European Parliament has accused China of \u201choarding food stocks\u201d, which he claims has contributed to rising food prices.<\/p>\n<p>Antonio Tajani \u2014 a former president of the European Parliament and current MEP for Central Italy \u2014&nbsp;demanded that Brussels intervene to stabilise agricultural prices and to take countermeasures against the food hoarding practices of Beijing.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAccording to the UN, in one year, agricultural prices have risen by 30 per cent, also due to China\u2019s policy of hoarding food stocks,\u201d he wrote in a a letter to the European Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilgiornale.it\/news\/politica\/tajani-lancia-lallarme-prezzi-agricoli-stelle-colpa-cina-1999530.html\">per<\/a> the Italian newspaper&nbsp;<em>Il Giornale<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The MEP claimed that \u201c69 per cent of the world reserves of corn, 60 per cent of those of rice and 51 per cent of wheat are now in Chinese hands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the first 8 months of 2021, China spent on food imports approximately $98.1 billion, also buying through giants in the sector indirectly controlled by the Beijing government,\u201d the letter \u2014 which was also signed by the&nbsp;Italian Forza Italia-Ppe delegation to the European Parliament \u2014 continues. \u201cThe Wh Group, the leading Chinese meat operator, has acquired companies in Germany, Poland and the Netherlands.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Tajani also noted the effect the current energy crisis is having on food prices in Europe, the crisis itself an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2021\/11\/08\/european-energy-prices-soar-as-putin-holds-back-gas-supplies\/\">in-part result<\/a> of the bloc\u2019s reliance on Russian gas, as well as green energy alternatives which have yet to pick up the slack.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe current energy crisis also risks having an impact on the food supply chain,\u201d Tajani\u2019s letter reads. \u201cConsidering that the increase in agricultural prices is detrimental to citizens, the European Commission is asked what measures it intends to take to increase European production and stocks of agricultural products.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tajani\u2019s claims line up with those found in a recent report by Nikkei Asia, which <a href=\"https:\/\/asia.nikkei.com\/Spotlight\/Datawatch\/China-hoards-over-half-the-world-s-grain-pushing-up-global-prices\">claims<\/a> that China will soon accumulate the majority of the world\u2019s maize, rice and wheat reserves.<\/p>\n<p>Qin Yunyun, an official at China\u2019s&nbsp;National Food and Strategic Reserves Administration, has <a href=\"https:\/\/asia.nikkei.com\/Spotlight\/Datawatch\/China-hoards-over-half-the-world-s-grain-pushing-up-global-prices\">said<\/a> that the nation is keeping its food stockpiles at a \u201chistorically high level\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur wheat stockpiles can meet demand for one and a half years,\u201d Nikkei <a href=\"https:\/\/asia.nikkei.com\/Spotlight\/Datawatch\/China-hoards-over-half-the-world-s-grain-pushing-up-global-prices\">reports<\/a> the official as saying. \u201cThere is no problem whatsoever about the supply of food.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2021\/01\/05\/setback-for-the-free-world-eu-deal-with-communist-china-draws-harsh-criticism\/\">massive trade deal<\/a> with the communist state after a series of tit-for-tat sanctions earlier this year, the newly elected chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, has reportedly assured Chinese dictator Xi Jinping that he will push for the investment pact to \u201ctake effect as soon as possible,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/olaf-scholz-xi-jinping-deepen-economic-ties-germany-china-human-rights\/\">according<\/a> to a Chinese readout of the phone call between the two leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Scholz reportedly said he will look \u201cto host a new round of German-Chinese government consultations, strengthen practical cooperation in clean energy, digital economy and service industries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under the leadership of his predecessor, Angela Merkel, Germany\u2019s economy became deeply intertwined with China, which became its&nbsp;<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/0de447eb-999d-452f-a1c9-d235cc5ea6d9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">top trading partner<\/a> in 2018.
