We have opened a criminal case,\u201d police spokeswoman Thandi Mbambo said, adding that the suspect will appear in court on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The parliament building houses a collection of rare books and the original copy of the former Afrikaans national anthem \u201cDie Stem van Suid-Afrika\u201d (\u201cThe Voice of South Africa\u201d), which was already damaged.<\/p>\n<p>The full extent of the fire\u2019s damage was still being assessed.<\/p>\n<p>The parliament\u2019s presiding officers were to meet on Monday with Public Works Minister Patricia de Lille to take stock of the devastation.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Jean-Pierre Smith, Cape Town\u2019s mayoral committee member for safety and security, told reporters the entire complex had suffered extensive water and fire damage and \u201cnothing\u201d was left of the part of the historic part.<\/p>\n<p>This is where Parliament kept treasures including around 4,000 heritage and art works, some dating back to the 17th century.<\/p>\n<p>These include the 120- metre-long (390-foot) Keiskamma tapestry, named after a river in the southeast of the country, tracing the history of South Africa from the first indigenous peoples, the San, to the historic democratic elections of 1994.<\/p>\n<p>After ravaging the older wing of the building, the flames spread to newer parts of the complex which are currently in use.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19336746\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/GettyImages-1237503908.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19336746\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/GettyImages-1237503908.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">&nbsp;(Photo by RODGER BOSCH\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u2013 Second fire in a year \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Around 70 firefighters were deployed on Sunday, some using a crane to spray water on the blaze.
