Version: 4.0.47--><div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/wild-forest-elephant-calf-640x335-1.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/div>\n<p class=\"subheading\">The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Germany warns that more than one million species could go extinct within the next ten years in the biggest mass extinction since the dinosaurs.<\/p>\n<p>In publishing its \u201cWinners and Losers of 2021\u201d this week, an annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwf.de\/2021\/dezember\/gewinner-und-verlierer-2021\">report<\/a> including an enumeration of animals whose existence is under threat, WWF Germany alleges that African forest elephants and thousands of other species could be obliterated from the planet in just a few years.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Along with African forest elephants, WWF asserts that the situations of \u201cpolar bears, tree frogs, cranes and fish species such as sturgeon and cod are getting worse and worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, \u201ca third of all shark and ray species have been endangered since 2021,\u201d the report states. \u201cOverfishing is the main reason for the decline in stocks, but habitat loss and the climate crisis are also responsible for the precarious situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sparing no hyperbole, the WWF report warns of a \u201ccatastrophic escalation of the global extinction of species\u201d that could wipe out a million species within the next decade.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The upcoming animal apocalypse could represent the \u201cgreatest extinction of species since the end of the dinosaur era,\u201d WWF <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/looming-mass-extinction-could-be-biggest-since-the-dinosaurs-says-wwf\/a-60289286\">declares<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is bad news not only for the animal world, but for humans as well, the organization warns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the earth is sick, so will people be,\u201d Eberhard Brandes, managing director at WWF Germany, says, \u201cbecause we depend on vital ecosystems and biodiversity for our own safe and healthy life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpecies conservation is no longer just about defeating an environmental problem, but is rather about the question of whether or not humanity will eventually end up on the Red List in an endangered category \u2014 and thereby become a victim of its own lifestyle,\u201d Brandes said.<\/p>\n<p>In its report, WWF references the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/\">Red List<\/a>\u201d produced by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which claims that 40,000 animal species are \u201cthreatened with extinction.\u201d It is unclear how WWF extrapolates the figure of a million imminent new extinctions from these data.<\/p>\n<p>The International Union for Conservation of Nature asserts that its Red List of Threatened Species \u201chas evolved to become the world\u2019s most comprehensive information source on the global conservation status of animal, fungi and plant species.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"twitter-follow-button\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tdwilliamsrome?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" data-show-count=\"false\">Follow @tdwilliamsrome<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Germany warns that more than one million species could go extinct within the next ten years in the biggest mass extinction since the dinosaurs.
