From the 1st of January 2022 importers must submit a full customs declaration on any goods being brought into Britain, and will be unable to delay completing these forms for up to 175 days, which they previously were allowed to do.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Importers will also have to provide advance notice if their goods contain&nbsp;fresh food, animals and\/or plants before they arrive in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>There is however one exemption \u2014 the island of Ireland \u2014 where the British government will not impose checks providing that negotiations over the Northern Ireland Protocol continue,&nbsp;POLITICO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/newsletter\/london-playbook\/new-year-headaches-big-ben-is-back-2022-primer\/\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is the first time that Britain has implemented proper border controls post-Brexit, previously taking a more lax approach in implementing new rules, compared to the EU who imposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2020\/06\/20\/eu-to-impose-full-customs-checks-on-uk-post-brexit-to-protect-single-market\/\">full customs checks<\/a> on Britain from January 1st 2021 \u2013 the moment Britain officially left the EU\u2019s Single Market and Customs Union.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Britain has previously delayed bringing in customs checks with the EU three times since January 2020, citing supply chain concerns. Similarly, the measures being brought in on January 1st 2022 are still not fully complete, with export health certificates still being phased in and will only be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2021\/09\/14\/uk-delays-introduction-of-customs-checks-on-eu-imports-citing-supply-chain-issues\">required<\/a>, at this stage, from the 1st of July 2022.<\/p>\n<p>This decision to delay implementing border checks has led to the EU having much greater control over the customs arrangements between Britain and Europe, which was evident when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-9092385\/Huge-backlog-lorries-Kent-cleared-mass-Covid-testing-drive.html\">thousands<\/a> of European drivers were left stranded at the port of Dover in December 2020, forcing the British army to step in to carry out over 20,000 Covid tests on drivers, to allow their entry into France.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Free from EU Rules, UK Can Make Imports Cheaper Under Post-Brexit UK Trade Global Tariff Structure <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/YmHOePdeYx\">https:\/\/t.co\/YmHOePdeYx<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Breitbart London (@BreitbartLondon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BreitbartLondon\/status\/1262797668721491971?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 19, 2020<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The European Union also frustrated trade between Northern Ireland and mainland Britain imposing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/news\/eu-offers-to-ease-border-checks-to-solve-n-ireland-brexit-row\/\">customs border<\/a> in the Irish Sea. The customs border was enforced by the EU due to The Good Friday Agreement preventing a border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, and the EU\u2019s concerns about mainland British goods entering Europe without checks via this perceived back door.<\/p>\n<p>This customs border became a point of tension during the pandemic when the EU in January 2021 attempted to block vaccines being delivered to the UK, due to Brussels\u2019 lack of preparedness to preorder vaccines.
