He claimed it was the Taliban that violated the agreements Karzai spoke of, pushing into the city by force two hours after they had promised to remain outside.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>\u201cTwo different factions of the Taliban were closing in from two different directions, and the possibility of a massive conflict between them that would destroy the city of five million and bring havoc to the people was enormous,\u201d he claimed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Commenting on the Ghani interview, Australia\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2021-12-31\/ashraf-ghani-details-escape-from-kabul-with-bbc\/100732406\"><span>ABC News<\/span><\/a><span> noted there was \u201cno evidence\u201d of any rival Taliban factions battling for control when the insurgents took Kabul. My instructions had been to prepare for departure for Khost. He told me that Khost had fallen and so had Jalalabad,\u201d Ghani said of his conversation with the security chief.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>\u201cI did not know where we will go. Only when we took off, it became clear that we were leaving [Afghanistan]. So this really was sudden,\u201d he claimed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Ghani claimed the sudden U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan \u201cerased\u201d his government, leading to a swift Taliban takeover that he called a \u201cviolent coup, not a political agreement, or a political process where the people have been involved.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>\u201cI want to categorically state, I did not take any money out of the country,\u201d he said of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2021\/08\/18\/afghan-official-ex-president-ashraf-ghani-left-169-million-interpol-aid-needed\/\"><span>allegations<\/span><\/a><span> from other Afghan officials that he left with $170 million in cash from the national treasury.&nbsp;<\/span><span>\u201cMy style of life is known to everyone. What would I do with money?\u201d he said, dismissing the accusations of theft as a Russian disinformation campaign and expressing his willingness to sit for a \u201clie-detector test.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cMy life\u2019s work has been destroyed. My values had been trampled on. And I have been made a scapegoat,\u201d Ghani complained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Former U.S. envoy to Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/12\/30\/world\/asia\/ashraf-ghani-bbc-interview.html\"><span>appeared<\/span><\/a><span> on the same BBC program as Ghani and rejected his claims.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>Khalilzad substantially supported the account given by Karzai that Ghani fled unexpectedly and ruined a deal with the Taliban that could have produced a more orderly political transition for Afghanistan. Khalilzad noted it was a matter of record that Ghani told U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken that he would remain in Kabul and participate in the transfer of power, just hours before Ghani jumped on a helicopter and left the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The <\/span><i><span>WSJ<\/span><\/i><span> reported a \u201cdeluge of anger from Afghans on social media\u201d after Ghani\u2019s BBC interview, with critics calling Ghani and his top officials \u201ctreasonous cowards\u201d and denouncing his excuse-making interview as an \u201cinsult\u201d to the suffering Afghan people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>ABC News noted Ghani concluded his presidential career with the dubious honor of making the list of the world\u2019s most corrupt officials, compiled every year by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.occrp.org\/en\/poy\/2021\/\"><span>Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project<\/span><\/a><span> (OCCRP), an international panel of journalists and scholars.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Ghani lost the top spot to Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko, but he was a finalist along with Bashar Assad of Syria and Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey \u2013 a formidable achievement, given the panel had 1,167 nominees to choose from.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cHe was breathtaking in both his corruption and his gross incompetence.
