River Rosenquist, 26, of Naples, was in an unauthorized area of the zoo at the tiger enclosure after the zoo closed Wednesday. Rosenquist, who had already breached an initial barrier, put his hand through the enclosure fence and the tiger grabbed it and pulled his arm into the enclosure. A CCSO deputy responded to the scene. The deputy initially tried to get the tiger to release the arm but he was left with no option but to shoot the animal in order to save Rosenquist\u2019s life. \u201cOur deputy did everything he could do in that situation and he ultimately made the only possible decision he could in order to save this man\u2019s life,\u201d said Collier County Sheriff Kevin Rambosk. \u201cThis was a tragic encounter at our world-class zoo facility. We value our community partnership with the Naples Zoo and their focus on conservation and education.\u201d The tiger, Eko, retreated to the rear of the enclosure after being struck by the single shot fired by the deputy. A CCSO drone was flown into the enclosure to determine the tiger\u2019s injuries but video from the drone showed that the tiger was unresponsive.  A zoo veterinarian tranquilized the tiger and entered the enclosure to assess the animal when it was safe to do so. The veterinarian determined that the tiger had expired from its injury. The investigation will determine whether criminal charges will be filed against Rosenquist.<\/p>\n<p>Posted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/colliersheriff\">Collier County Sheriff&#8217;s Office<\/a> on Thursday, December 30, 2021<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>The incident <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/colliersheriff\/posts\/284553983697380\">occurred<\/a> Wednesday evening after the zoo was closed for the day. The Collier County Sheriff\u2019s Office (CCSO) says a preliminary investigation indicated the cleaning service worker, later identified as Naples resident&nbsp;River Rosenquist, 26, \u201ctraversed an initial fence barrier and put his arm through the fencing of the tiger enclosure\u201d to either feed or pet the eight-year-old tiger named Eko.<\/p>\n<p>Workers for the cleaning company are not authorized to go near the tiger enclosure. \u201cThe cleaning company is responsible for cleaning restrooms and the gift shop, not the animal enclosures,\u201d the CCSO stated.<\/p>\n<p>The Malayan tiger then grabbed onto the worker\u2019s arm and pulled it into the enclosure, per the CCSO.<\/p>\n<p>Deputies were dispatched to the area at 6:26 p.m. The first deputy on scene discovered the tiger latched onto the man\u2019s arm through the enclosure fence, according to bodycam footage.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>In the footage, the deputy approaches the tiger\u2019s enclosure to the sounds of blood-curdling screams.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cPlease help me! Please, please, please!\u201d Rosenquist cried out in desperation.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe deputy initially tried to get the tiger to release the arm but he was left with no option but to shoot the animal in order to save Rosenquist\u2019s life,\u201d the CCSO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/colliersheriff\/videos\/1053991321842830\/\">stated<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>After being shot, Eko \u201cretreated to the back of the enclosure,\u201d and Rosenquist was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Deputies flew a drone into the enclosure to check on the tiger\u2019s status and discovered the animal was unresponsive, the CCSO stated. Eko was tranquilized, and a veterinarian entered the dwelling after he was sedated and determined him to be dead.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Collier County Sheriff Kevin Rambosk provided a statement on the shooting:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>Our deputy did everything he could do in that situation and he ultimately made the only possible decision he could in order to save this man\u2019s life. This was a tragic encounter at our world-class zoo facility. We value our community partnership with the Naples Zoo and their focus on conservation and education.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Rosenquist may face criminal charges depending on the results of the CCSO\u2019s investigation.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The zoo\u2019s director of public relations and public marketing, Courtney Jolly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/live\/?ref=watch_permalink&amp;v=245452464344994\">spoke<\/a> to reporters Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe fully support CCSO and what they had to do,\u201d Jolly said. \u201cAt the end of the day, if a person is in imminent danger, they have to take that action, and we support CCSO, and the officer, unfortunately, had to do his job.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>She noted the zoo has a \u201cshoot team\u201d and a \u201clead darter\u201d specially trained for crisis situations when the zoo is open to the public, but as the incident happened after hours, the team was not on scene.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The incident <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/clips\/2016\/05\/30\/raw-video-harambe-the-gorilla-drags-boy-like-a-ragdoll\/\">brings<\/a> to mind the fatal shooting of the 400-pound gorilla Harambe in 2016.
