Jared Polis (D) commuted the prison term of a truck driver sentenced to 110 years following a deadly accident, which cut the sentence to 10 years.<\/p>\n<div id=\"taboolaReadMoreBelow\">\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe man, Rogel Aguilera-Mederos, 26, killed four people on April 25, 2019, after, he said, his brakes failed on the downhill grade on Interstate 70 eastbound outside Denver,\u201d NBC News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/truck-driver-sentence-reduced-110-years-10-years-colorado-governor-fat-rcna10494\">reported<\/a> Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Prosecutors argued he acted recklessly and made several bad decisions prior to the crash.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Video footage from April 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mEl-Bo24JZ8\">showed<\/a> the scene:<\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Polis lowered the man\u2019s sentence by 100 years, stating in a recent letter the life sentence was&nbsp;inappropriate for a \u201ctragic but unintentional act.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWhile you are not blameless, your sentence is disproportionate compared with many other inmates in our criminal justice system who committed intentional, premeditated, or violent crimes,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/129rAnWTqdt5A5AERm_9hE5vS94_vI_h-\/view\">wrote<\/a> in the letter to Aguilera-Mederos:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>You have wondered why your life was spared when other lives were taken. You will struggle with this burden of this event for the rest of your life, but never forget that because of this event, countless others will struggle with the loss of their loved ones or injuries as well. And you will serve your just sentence.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\">The man was behind the wheel of a truck pulling a trailer with lumber and moving at approximately 85 mph in a location where the speed limit for commercial vehicles was 45 mph, authorities noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cA chain-reaction crash and a fire ensued involving 28 vehicles,\u201d the NBC report said, adding, \u201cDoyle Harrison, 61; William Bailey, 67; Stanley Politano, 69; and Miguel Lamas Arrellano, 24, died in the accident.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"\">Earlier this month, truckers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-e1_wZYdMhA\">protested<\/a> against the 110-year sentence:<\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<p class=\"\">During the initial sentencing, Judge A. Bruce Jones explained the law required he sentence the truck driver to consecutive sentences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIf I had the discretion, if I thought I had the discretion, I would not run those sentences consecutively,\u201d Jones commented at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Polis\u2019 decision came when a state district attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/www.q13fox.com\/news\/truck-driver-rogel-aguilera-mederos-granted-clemency-by-colorado-governor-after-110-year-prison-sentence\">asked<\/a> a judge recently to consider lowering Aguilera-Mederos\u2019 sentence after public outcry that saw approximately five million sign an online petition seeking clemency for the man, Fox 13 reported.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Colorado Gov.
