The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) points to COVID-19 mitigation measures and flu vaccination as the likely cause of the low flu activity.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/1530321737249160\/posts\/3267429300205053\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dec. 28 post<\/a>, which has garnered over 300 reactions, alleges, \u201cThe flu didn\u2019t take off last year. It was called Covid.\u201d It also quotes a line \u2013 \u201cThe U.S. flu season has arrived on schedule after taking a year off\u201d \u2013&nbsp;from a <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/coronavirus-pandemic-science-health-flu-8895782660eb8491856e81fd387d6591\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dec. 27 Associated Press article<\/a>, but that article does not claim at any point that flu cases were being mislabeled as COVID-19 cases.<\/p>\n<p>Flu activity was, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/season\/faq-flu-season-2020-2021.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CDC<\/a>, \u201cunusually low\u201d in the U.S. during the 2020-2021 flu season, but it was not due to flu cases being counted as COVID-19 cases. The CDC explains on its website that \u201cCOVID-19 mitigation measures such as wearing face masks, staying home, hand washing, school closures, reduced travel, increased ventilation of indoor spaces, and physical distancing, likely contributed to the decline in 2020-2021 flu incidence, hospitalizations and deaths,\u201d as well as flu vaccination.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ranjani Kaylan, the medical director of infection control at Sutter Roseville Medical Center, also pointed to the flu vaccine and COVID-19 mitigation measures as contributing to the mild 2020-2021 flu season, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/vitals.sutterhealth.org\/flu-has-not-disappeared-why-flu-shots-this-year-are-important\/?fbclid=IwAR0Pd2_a4-2BYDXiHaWIUYK_kubPKUf6C96uD5KYCZrB1XVdgQJFHgLBJe4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an article<\/a> published by Sutter Health. Other fact-checking outlets such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/uk-factcheck-flu-levels\/fact-check-low-flu-levels-during-the-pandemic-is-likely-the-result-of-coronavirus-measures-idUSKBN29R2AU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reuters<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/factcheck.afp.com\/cdc-does-not-add-flu-and-pneumonia-deaths-covid-19-toll\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AFP<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hFwj1-3tAiE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Verify<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.factcheck.org\/2020\/12\/instagram-post-distorts-facts-on-covid-19-death-reporting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Factcheck.org<\/a> have debunked similar claims about flu deaths or flu cases being counted as such for COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>Cases of influenza have been detected in the U.S. during the current 2021-2022 flu season. The CDC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/weekly\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">states<\/a> on its website&nbsp;that \u201cinfluenza activity is increasing, with the eastern and central parts of the country seeing the largest increases and the western part of the country reporting lower levels of influenza virus circulation.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2020\/05\/21\/fact-check-flu-kill-80000-people-united-states-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Did The Flu Kill 80,000 People In The US In 2019?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/weekly\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The CDC<\/a> reported 1,265 patients in the U.S. were admitted to the hospital with influenza in the week ending Dec. 18 alone. Between Oct. 3 and Dec. 18, clinical laboratories recorded over 13,000 specimens positive for flu and public health laboratories recorded over 4,300, according to the CDC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/weekly\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">weekly influenza surveillance report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Lynette Brammer, who leads the CDC\u2019s domestic influenza surveillance team, said, \u201cThis is setting itself up to be more of a normal flu season,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/coronavirus-pandemic-science-health-flu-8895782660eb8491856e81fd387d6591\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Associated Press<\/a> reported Dec. 27.
