Version: 4.0.47--><div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/nigeria-shooting-640x335-1.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/div>\n<p class=\"subheading\">Unknown gunmen killed parish priest Father Luke Mewhenu Adeleke as he left Mass on Christmas Eve in Ogun state, southwest Nigeria, Vatican News reported Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty-eight-year-old Father Adeleke was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaticannews.va\/en\/africa\/news\/2021-12\/nigeria-catholic-priest-killed-on-christmas-eve-to-be-laid-to-r.html\">returning<\/a> to his residence at St. Anthony Ijemo-Fadipe Parish of the Abeokuta Diocese after celebrating midnight Mass at Ogunmakin, an outstation of the parish, when he was accosted by gunmen.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe attackers fired at his vehicle and the bullets hit his legs, making him lose a lot of blood and died in his car,\u201d the Nigeria Catholic Network (NCN) reported, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aciafrica.org\/news\/4992\/catholic-priest-murdered-on-christmas-eve-in-nigeria-to-be-laid-to-rest-on-new-year-eve\">noting<\/a> that the body of the slain priest \u201cwas later deposited at the mortuary in the Sacred Heart Hospital, Lantoro, Abeokuta.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>According to Father Gregory Fadele, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fides.org\/it\/news\/71382-AFRICA_NIGERIA_Padre_Adeleke_ucciso_per_un_tentativo_di_sequestro_dopo_aver_celebrato_l_Eucarestia\">director<\/a> of social communications for the diocese of Abeokuta, \u201cFather Luke was the victim of an act of violence, we believe it was an attempted kidnapping, a kidnapping for the purpose of ransom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe shots fired by the bandits were probably aimed at the tires of the vehicle in which he was traveling, instead they got into the car and hit him first in the leg and then in the other,\u201d Father Fadele said.<\/p>\n<p>Father Adeleke then tried to drive to the nearest hospital but before arriving, \u201che lost all his strength, lost consciousness and passed away,\u201d Father Fadele said.<\/p>\n<p>Father Adeleke\u2019s funeral will take place Friday at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Cathedral in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun state.<\/p>\n<p>Since the onset of Nigeria\u2019s jihadist offensive in 2009, more than 36,000 people have been <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.aleteia.org\/2021\/12\/28\/nigeria-pere-luke-adeleke-abattu-alors-quil-sortait-de-la-messe\/\">killed<\/a> violently in the country.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"twitter-follow-button\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tdwilliamsrome?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" data-show-count=\"false\">Follow @tdwilliamsrome<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unknown gunmen killed parish priest Father Luke Mewhenu Adeleke as he left Mass on Christmas Eve in Ogun state, southwest Nigeria, Vatican News reported Thursday.
