As it stands now, the GOP needs to net five seats in the midterm elections to regain control of the House majority.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>The Cook Political Report\u2019s new&nbsp;ratings <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cookpolitical.com\/ratings\/house-race-ratings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indicate<\/a> the Democrats will be defending more \u201ctoss-up\u201d districts than Republicans. There are eight Democrat seats in the \u201ctoss-up\u201d category, compared to six for Republican seats. Toss-up districts are the most competitive races, where either party \u201chas a good chance of winning.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">NEW: <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CookPolitical?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@CookPolitical<\/a>&#8216;s 2022 House ratings for new districts, now that we&#8217;re past the halfway point of redistricting. Michigan\u2019s 10th and Arizona\u2019s 2nd congressional districts are considered \u201clikely Republican\u201d seats. Texas\u2019s 15th, Arizona\u2019s 6th, and New Jersey\u2019s 7th congressional districts were placed in the \u201clean Republican\u201d column.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>A \u201clikely\u201d seat has the potential to become engaged but is not yet considered competitive. The \u201clean\u201d seats are districts with competitive races, where one party has an advantage.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, the Cook Political Report has zero Republican-held districts in the \u201clikely Democrat\u201d column. Additionally, only one Republican seat is placed in the \u201clean Democrat\u201d category. That sole seat is in Illinois\u2019s 13th congressional district, which is represented by Rep. Rodney Davis (R-IL). Davis is now running for reelection in Illinois\u2019 15th district after the Democrat Party&nbsp;<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nprillinois.org\/statehouse\/2021-11-30\/rodney-davis-to-announce-sixth-term-for-congress-ending-speculation-on-challenge-to-pritzker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">carved<\/a>&nbsp;Davis out of his current seat during the redistricting process.<\/p>\n<p>Davis\u2019s seat is considered a Republican-held district because \u201cthe Cook Political Report\u2019s policy is to list the \u2018incumbent party\u2019 according to the new district\u2019s estimated Partisan Voter Index score.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Due to redistricting, the Cook Political Report releases their ratings on a rolling basis while states finalize new political maps for the decade.<\/p>\n<p>For example, New Jersey\u2019s redistricting commission&nbsp;<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/12\/23\/new-jerseys-redistricting-commission-bolsters-democrat-strength\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">approved<\/a>&nbsp;new political maps last week, impacting the Cook Political Report\u2019s latest House forecast. Although the state\u2019s new maps created Democrat strongholds in certain districts, the commission sacrificed Rep. Tom Malinowski\u2019s (D-NJ) seat in the seventh congressional district.
