The curriculum would require <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1jfQtHvFiRBEXQXhFGld0HEQ8iPX420Ll\/view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1jfQtHvFiRBEXQXhFGld0HEQ8iPX420Ll\/view&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1612469183911000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHaitPiGUrAY9_TDlqXNTlW9euUqw\" data-mt-detrack-inspected=\"true\" data-mt-detrack-attachment-inspected=\"true\">second<\/a> graders to learn &#8220;how various indigenous, religious, gender, and racial groups advocate for freedom and equality,&#8221; while <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1LeXjPTxRf-ar1QFFpVt2xRO0yC2g2FLS\/view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1LeXjPTxRf-ar1QFFpVt2xRO0yC2g2FLS\/view&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1612469183911000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFKQHAOldaUEKbf80ciLSa7jjvz_Q\" data-mt-detrack-inspected=\"true\" data-mt-detrack-attachment-inspected=\"true\">fourth<\/a> graders would learn how &#8220;revolution, reform, and resistance&#8221; shaped North Carolina.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t think that these things that we have included have been for the benefit of the students,&#8221; Robinson said during a school board meeting in late January. &#8220;There&#8217;s no reason why we should be trying to teach second graders about the complex issues of race. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markrobinsonfornc.com\/state_board_of_education_standards?fbclid=IwAR3wTOEZHRjYxGoBx7dyFmzMlQcDrmlufKRgfX2L0NQkDaOet_Dkqa-Qdl4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">petition<\/a>\u2014that by Wednesday afternoon had nearly 30,000 signatures\u2014he argued that the courses are designed to &#8220;indoctrinate our students against our great country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">North Carolina\u2019s education board began revising old curriculum standards in April 2019. They were slated to pass updated standards last summer until board member James Ford\u2014an outspoken <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JEFordNCTOY\/status\/1274415638497370112\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/twitter.com\/JEFordNCTOY?ref_src%3Dtwsrc%255Egoogle%257Ctwcamp%255Eserp%257Ctwgr%255Eauthor&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1612469183911000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFyL1d6lnK_i4hKxnZV67QY0CAc1A\" data-mt-detrack-inspected=\"true\" data-mt-detrack-attachment-inspected=\"true\">supporter<\/a> of the Black Lives Matter movement\u2014halted the process and asked for more specific language to identify marginalized groups to study.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">At one point in the draft process, the standards included teaching students as young as kindergarten about &#8220;systemic racism&#8221; and &#8220;gender identity.&#8221; While the education board edited that the words &#8220;systemic&#8221; and &#8220;gender&#8221; out last month, opponents of the changes say the tone of the standards remains. still suggests that the United States is inherently racist.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I would still need to know how racism, minus \u2018systemic,&#8217; how identity, minus \u2018gender,&#8217; is contextualized in the objectives,&#8221; said Dr. Olivia Oxendine, a member of the state&#8217;s education board since 2013. &#8220;Just removing words doesn&#8217;t change the intent of the objectives.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As long as the objective is teaching students that the United States is a racist nation, Robinson says he will not approve.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;The system of government that we have in this nation is not systemically racist; in fact, it is not racist at all,&#8221; he said. &#8220;To say that this is a racist nation\u2014that is not true. And when we write standards that point to that direction in any way, we are doing our students a disservice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Under the proposed curriculum standards, high school students taking American history would <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1FqVEvoHLGNAZqRvHjGuQdjJiQbsNzcLz\/view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1FqVEvoHLGNAZqRvHjGuQdjJiQbsNzcLz\/view&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1612469183911000&amp;usg=AFQjCNF5X-MSDXXaIPp5GVxonZSDematqQ\" data-mt-detrack-inspected=\"true\" data-mt-detrack-attachment-inspected=\"true\">learn<\/a> to &#8220;explain how slavery, xenophobia, disenfranchisement, and intolerance have affected individual and group perspectives of themselves as Americans&#8221; and to &#8220;compare how some groups in American society have benefited from economic policies while other groups have been systemically denied the same benefits.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Terry Stoops, the director of the Center for Effective Education, said that the new standards fail to balance the study between individual and common identity. He argued those who oppose the standards don&#8217;t fear addressing the dark sides of America&#8217;s past but, rather, &#8220;object to making bigotry the beginning, middle, and end of the American story.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Objection to the standards is not that they highlight disturbing parts of our history, but that they fail to balance between good and bad, evil and righteous,&#8221; Stoops told the <em>Washington Free Beacon<\/em>. &#8220;America&#8217;s history reflects both of those extremes. And the standards as they are written prefer to talk about one side of the American story and fail to highlight the common good, the need for national unity, and the idea that we can be a common nation and share common ideals while still being individual groups.&#8221;<span id=\"m_-7784745869057334247gmail-docs-internal-guid-2650fd22-7fff-57c6-5ea5-14c7719da93c\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Robinson has faced backlash for opposing the new standards. A local news station on Tuesday <a href=\"https:\/\/nsjonline.com\/article\/2021\/02\/wral-opinion-cartoonist-depicts-state-board-of-education-members-as-racists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published a political cartoon<\/a> depicting Robinson and other Republican&nbsp;opponents of the curriculum changes as members of the Ku Klux Klan.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1442287\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width:300px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1442287 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/cartoon-300x225-1.jpg\" alt width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\" style=\"width:300px;padding: 5px\">Local cartoon portrays Robinson as a KKK member \/ WRAL<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;On the second day of Black History Month, the first Black lieutenant governor of North Carolina has been portrayed as racist,&#8221; Robinson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=26hVaUWV1Dg&amp;feature=emb_title\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>, criticizing the idea that anyone &#8220;would portray a black man, just because he\u2019s in the GOP, as a Klansman.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Though Robinson has a seat on the board as lieutenant governor, he is likely fighting an uphill battle against the standards\u2014a majority of voting members were appointed by North Carolina&#8217;s Democratic governor Roy Cooper.
