Running water over rapid home COVID-19 tests can cause them to produce invalid results, as they are not meant to be used in such a manner.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The image shows what looks like a positive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abbott.com\/corpnewsroom\/diagnostics-testing\/our-quick-guide-to-rapid-COVID-19-testing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BinaxNOW<\/a> home COVID-19 test, with the Facebook user claiming in the caption that the test produced the positive result after being exposed to water. \u201cNow y\u2019all do the math,\u201d the caption <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=4617146744999268&amp;set=a.311766988870620&amp;type=3&amp;eid=ARA0nApbY8rSOilsbXgG2vYveoWj_BbTs2bs0nzlZ9FEzdCTLR4Be7gd0qiroqIZT_evnYBdGH16YCT1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">goes on<\/a> to say. \u201cThis is why so many people getting sick so fast the whole time y\u2019all thinking we giving it to each other ( which is still possible) but the bigger picture is they giving it to all us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The test result, however, is not due to the presence of SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, in drinking water, nor does it mean such testing kits are inaccurate. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2020\/03\/26\/fact-check-hot-water-lemon-kill-coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Does Hot Water With Lemon Kill Coronavirus?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The BinaxNOW rapid antigen test is a lateral flow immunoassay meant to detect COVID-19 using samples swabbed from the lower nasal passage, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abbott.com\/corpnewsroom\/diagnostics-testing\/BinaxNOW-what-you-need-to-know.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a> of Abbott Laboratories, the company that produces the test. Pouring tap water on the test goes against the test\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/141570\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">instructions<\/a> for use.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBinaxNOW is not for use with water or any other foods or liquids,\u201d an Abbott Laboratories spokesperson told Check Your Fact in an email. \u201cWhen used as intended, it is a highly accurate test that is helping to detect COVID-19 and can significantly improve efforts to control transmission. Spreading misinformation with deliberate misuse of a medical product during a pandemic is misleading, irresponsible and dangerous to public health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOther liquids have chemical properties which can cause a chemical reaction on the test strip, resulting in misleading or inaccurate results,\u201d the spokesperson continued. \u201cFailure to follow the instructions for the test procedure and interpretation of test results may adversely affect test performance and produce misleading or invalid results.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/andre.mangual\/videos\/1059484784624576\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">video<\/a> making a similar claim about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clinitest.siemens-healthineers.com\/us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Siemens Healthineers CLINITEST Rapid COVID-19 Antigen Self-Test<\/a> has also been circulating online in recent days. In an email to Check Your Fact, a spokesperson for the company said: \u201cThe test is designed to identify COVID-19 from human nasal samples only. Using water or other fluids may generate different results (such as triggering a false positive) but the test is accurate when used as directed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>SARS-CoV-2 \u201chas not been detected in drinking water\u201d and the typical water treatments that \u201cuse filtration and disinfection, such as those in most municipal drinking water systems, should remove or inactivate the virus that causes COVID-19,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/php\/water.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>.
