It was obtained by <a href=\"https:\/\/media.gm.com\/media\/us\/en\/gm\/home.detail.html\/content\/Pages\/news\/us\/en\/2021\/mar\/0312-rencen.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GM<\/a> in 1996 to be the site of the company\u2019s headquarters. The offices of other companies, as well as restaurants, stores and a <a href=\"https:\/\/gmrencen.com\/stays\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marriott hotel<\/a>, can also be found in the complex, according to the center\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/gmrencen.com\/about-the-ren-cen\/#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The post shared on Facebook claims that GM has since sold the complex. \u201cBREAKING NEWS: General Motors has sold the Ren Center,\u201d reads the post, which also includes an image of two of the building\u2019s towers. \u201cThey now have no operational or ownership stake in their own World HQ.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/07\/14\/fact-check-image-electric-car-cemetery-france\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Does This Image Show An \u2018Electric Car Cemetery\u2019 In France?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The post, however, is misleading. While GM did sell the land under the Renaissance Center\u2019s 500 Tower and 600 Tower in October, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crainsdetroit.com\/real-estate\/shakeup-2-rencen-towers-complex-ownership-structur\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Crain\u2019s Detroit Business<\/a>, there is no evidence the company has left the center entirely. Check Your Fact could not find a single credible media report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=general+motors+sells+renaissance+center&amp;oq=General+Motors+sells+Renaissance+Center&amp;aqs=chrome.0.0i512.14996j1j7&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">online<\/a> of GM forfeiting ownership of the entire Renaissance Center. No such sale is mentioned in U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/sec.report\/CIK\/0001467858\/1#documents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">filings<\/a> or in the Wayne County Register of Deeds <a href=\"https:\/\/waynecountymi-web.tylerhost.net\/web\/search\/DOCSEARCH582S1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">records<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cPlease know that this is a rumor,\u201d said GM spokesperson <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mraynal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maria Raynal<\/a> in an email to Check Your Fact. \u201cGM has not sold the Renaissance Center and still owns Towers 100-400.
