(Photo by Charles Ledford\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h5>OAN Newsroom<br \/>\nUPDATED 6:05 PM PT \u2013 Wednesday, February 3, 2021<\/h5>\n<p>More than a year after being sued, a university backtracked on unconstitutional campus speech policies.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, the University of Illinois <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/university-of-illinois-settles-speech-code-lawsuit-before-supreme-court-can-review-case\/\">settled the case<\/a> filed by activist group <a href=\"https:\/\/speechfirst.org\/press-release\/speech-first-sues-the-university-of-illinois-at-urbana-champaign\/\">Speech First<\/a>. The University repealed its policy that required flyers to be pre-approved as well as offered new guarantees for students\u2019 free speech.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;The University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign will be forced to amend a handful of policies that were allegedly used as mechanisms to silence on-campus speech, ending a nearly two year legal battle&#8221; with Speech First.<\/p>\n<p>via <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chrissyclark_?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@chrissyclark_<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDailyWire?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@realDailyWire<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1DWLArveut\">https:\/\/t.co\/1DWLArveut<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Speech First (@Speech_First) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Speech_First\/status\/1357048715622682628?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 3, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Speech First filed the lawsuit in 2019. The group asserted the institution\u2019s \u201cbias incident\u201d policies and \u201cno contact directives\u201d could be used to silence protected speech.<\/p>\n<p>Nicole Neily, the founder and president of the pro-free speech organization, commented that the settlement confirmed the university\u2019s administration may not silence students \u201cby accusing them of bias.\u201d Neily has also spoken out against this in the past.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are so many different ways on college campuses today that schools try to discourage students from expressing viewpoints that they don\u2019t like,\u201d Neily said. \u201cIt\u2019s almost \u2014 I think of it as death by a thousand cuts. There are free speech zones, there are speech codes, there are bias response teams and so universities are in a position where they can pick winners and losers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neily added most \u201closers\u201d in the free speech battle end up being conservatives.
