Dianne Feinstein\u2019s seat, should the 87-year-old decide not to run for reelection in 2024.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Reimagine Justice California Coalition, which includes Los Angeles-based Black Lives Matter leaders Patrisse Cullors, Melina Abdullah, and dozens of allied progressive activist groups, co-signed <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/19y5-6X1ynpObhHbREItyCTBkKw2k-naR41rVlZsDOww\/edit\">an open letter<\/a> to Newsom dated February 1 scrutinizing Schiff\u2019s record.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We are proud to join this letter calling on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CAgovernor?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@CAgovernor<\/a><br \/>to not appoint Adam Schiff as our next Attorney General.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdam Schiff has spent his career serving the interests of police associations, the CDAA, and oppressive forces, not the people of California.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DocMellyMel?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@DocMellyMel<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Ftdckb56Ds\">pic.twitter.com\/Ftdckb56Ds<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Sunrise Movement LA \ud83c\udf04 (@SunriseMvmtLA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SunriseMvmtLA\/status\/1356672449450921986?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 2, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWhen Adam Schiff was a member of the California legislature, he was not only supportive of, but deeply invested in, creating our current system of incarceration,\u201d the letter reads. \u201cThis system of incarceration has continued to devastate communities of color and continues to take resources away from our schools, cities, and from all Californians in need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schiff was elected to the California State Senate in 1996, four years before moving on to the U.S. Congress. The letter includes a litany of decades-old bills attributed to Schiff, along with a brief breakdown of the alleged negative consequences those measures had on society after passage. It suggests that Schiff\u2019s policies helped increase the state\u2019s prison population, make more people homeless, and are partly responsible for leaving some rural areas of the Golden State without access to clean water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn his single term of four years, Adam Schiff made increased incarceration and punishment for poor parents the focus of his legislative agenda,\u201d it said. \u201cHe was not merely a \u2018yes\u2019 vote on bad legislation, he was the author of so many bills that were aimed directly at poor people, Black people, and people of color.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne person alone is not responsible for California\u2019s incarceration crisis. But Schiff stands out for his extreme punitiveness, particularly against children. Moreover, as a former federal prosecutor, Schiff knew exactly what the consequences of his actions would be; he cannot plead ignorance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other co-signers include USC law professor Jody D. However, even President Biden, one such politician, campaigned on<\/em> <em><a href=\"https:\/\/joebiden.com\/justice\/\">ending the federal death sentence<\/a> and acknowledged that his prior tough on crime policies <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/521326-biden-says-1994-crime-bill-was-a-mistake-during-abc-town-hall\">were a mistake.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In contrast, Schiff has continued to support legislation that would expand the size and scope of our system of incarceration, including voting recently to <u>expand<\/u> the federal death penalty, legislation that was part of a right wing narrative against Black Lives Matter and calls across the United States for police accountability.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It concludes by telling Gov. Newsom that California needs \u201can Attorney General who will hold police officers and police departments accountable, not one who has spent his legislative career serving their interests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are still dealing with the legacy of Adam Schiff in California,\u201d it continues. \u201cWe urge you in the strongest possible terms not to appoint Adam Schiff to be California\u2019s next Attorney General.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letter went on to encourage Newsom \u201cto gain our trust and support by appointing someone who has worked throughout their career to uplift the people of California, not someone who has used their power to punish Black people, Indigenous people, people of color, and poor Californians in a system marked by extreme racial and class disparities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/black-lives-matter-demands-ca-gov-newsom-appoint-a-black-woman-to-u-s-senate\">Black Lives Matter Demands CA Gov.
