We\u2019ve been forwarded over a dozen of these in the past 24 hours. \ud83d\ude44 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/P0LwYf6mkK\">pic.twitter.com\/P0LwYf6mkK<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Matt Dornic (@mdornic) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mdornic\/status\/1356961480684539906?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 3, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"css-1dbjc4n r-xoduu5 r-1mlwlqe r-1d2f490 r-1udh08x r-u8s1d r-h9hxbl r-417010\" title=\"Face with rolling eyes\" aria-label=\"Face with rolling eyes\">\n<div class=\"css-1dbjc4n r-1niwhzg r-vvn4in r-u6sd8q r-x3cy2q r-1p0dtai r-xoduu5 r-1pi2tsx r-1d2f490 r-u8s1d r-zchlnj r-ipm5af r-13qz1uu r-1wyyakw\">\n<p>Mainstream journalists were shocked that Dornic, the official spokesman for a self-described news network, would react in such sneering fashion to a reporter reaching out to sources for comment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a \u2026totally normal way to report,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/benyt\/status\/1357037208109264897\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> Ben Smith, media columnist for the <em>New York Times<\/em>. &#8220;Possibly not at CNN? But certainly everywhere else. Not a lot of people at Fox who do original reporting, but don&#8217;t really get the objection.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Heather Kelly, a <em>Washington Post<\/em> reporter who previously worked at CNN, concurred. &#8220;This [is] a way reporters get sources,&#8221; she <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/heatherkelly\/status\/1357045368605745153\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>. &#8220;It&#8217;s a tool I and many other reporters at CNN would frequently use to do our jobs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">Erik Wemple, media critic for the <em>Washington Post<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ErikWemple\/status\/1357012251421667328\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">argued<\/a> that Flood was &#8220;<\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">doing what many reporters, myself included, do: Trying to craft an appeal to sources.&#8221;&nbsp;<em>USA Today<\/em> reporter Brett Murphy <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BrettMmurphy\/status\/1357016609836175368?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agreed<\/a> that Flood was simply &#8220;reaching out to potential sources.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Fox News reporter&#8217;s messages on LinkedIn seemed like &#8220;pretty standard (and polite!) outreach to potential sources,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lachlan\/status\/1357037874395422722?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to Lachlan Markey, a liberal reporter for the <em>Axios<\/em> news blog. Journalist Nick Manes <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nickrmanes\/status\/1357038187336658944?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">argued<\/a>: &#8220;This is literally called practicing journalism.
