This is despite a dramatic increase in politically driven state violence throughout the past year, particularly after July 11.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>An estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/latin-america\/2021\/08\/03\/study-187000-cubans-participated-protests-july\/\">187,000<\/a> people took to the streets of nearly every municipality in Cuba on that day demanding an end to the 62-year-old communist regime, peacefully assembling to sing and chant anti-communist slogans. The Castro regime responded with public beatings, door-to-door raids in which suspected protesters were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/latin-america\/2021\/07\/14\/cuba-video-shows-police-shoot-protester-front-toddlers\/\">shot<\/a> in their own homes, and the mass arrest of anyone in the vicinity of the protests, often including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/latin-america\/2021\/07\/28\/cuba-minor-arrested-witnessing-protests-says-police-threatened-rape-her\/\">children<\/a> who had nothing to do with the event.<\/p>\n<p>Protesters persisted in demanding regime change, even as many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/latin-america\/2021\/12\/17\/battered-cuban-political-prisoners-call-more-protests-from-within-prison\/\">remained<\/a> behind bars. A second wave of national protests occurred on November 15, this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/latin-america\/2021\/11\/25\/gutierrez-boronat-cuba-hasnt-stopped-protesting-thanks-to-its-children-the-world-is-listening\/\">time<\/a> led by nuns and priests demanding a peaceful democratic transition.<\/p>\n<p>The protests have resulted in mass arrests, disappearances, and torture. The NGO Cuban Prisoners Defenders, which documents arrests of political dissidents, found a 500-percent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/latin-america\/2021\/12\/09\/cuba-ngo-logs-500-jump-political-prisoners-this-year\/\">increase<\/a>&nbsp;in confirmed political arrests year-on-year in December. The NGO, like similar organizations conducting this research around the world, emphasized at the time that its confirmed number of political prisoners is far lower than the true number of those the Castro regime has imprisoned, as many have simply gone missing; confirming that they are in a prison facility is nearly impossible.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The administration of President Joe Biden has presided over a simultaneous increase in arrests and repatriations of Cuban refugees and increasing chaos at the U.S. southern border, where many Cuban dissidents have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/latin-america\/2021\/06\/21\/exclusive-expatriated-pro-u-s-cuban-dissident-heads-to-southern-border-after-officials-ignore-his-case\/\">joined<\/a> an increasingly diverse set of travelers seeking to enter America. Cuban dissidents seeking refuge in the United States have complained that attempts to receive political asylum have largely fallen on deaf ears, leading them to attempt the dangerous and costly trek to Mexico from countries that do not require visas for Cuban travelers.<\/p>\n<p>Other Cubans have taken to increasingly far-flung locations to escape communism, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2021\/10\/30\/greece-91-cubans-arrested-police-suspect-migrant-smuggling-network\/\">Greece<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/latin-america\/2021\/11\/23\/report-cuban-refugees-trapped-in-migrant-mob-in-belarus\/\">Belarus<\/a>&nbsp;via Russia.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S.-based Cuban-interest media outlet Mart\u00ed Noticias reported on Tuesday that among the over 1,000 Cubans returned to the communist regime were 20 refugees recently&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotelevisionmarti.com\/a\/estados-unidos-repatria-a-20-cubanos-que-llegaron-a-los-cayos-de-florida\/310613.html\">found<\/a> traveling at sea near the Florida Keys. Mart\u00ed observed that the hundreds of Cubans arrested throughout 2021 were a much larger contingent than the 49 \u201cintercepted\u201d in the 2020 fiscal year, the 313 intercepted in fiscal year 2019, and 259 intercepted in fiscal year 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The number of Cubans attempting to flee the island by sea <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2016\/12\/21\/cuban-refugees-take-waters-raul-castro-ramps-oppression\/\">increased<\/a> significantly under President Barack Obama, who in 2014 announced an extensive concessions package to enrich the Castro regime, arguing that doing so would result in better relations between Washington and Havana. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2015\/09\/16\/video-12-cuban-refugees-dog-land-to-cheers-in-miami-on-broken-sailboat\/\">Videos<\/a> from the shores of Florida of Cuban&nbsp;<em>balseros<\/em>, or rafters, landing to the applause and welcome of Cuban-Americans on the beach became increasingly common until, in another blow to the Cuban human rights cause, President Obama repealed the \u201cwet foot\/dry foot\u201d policy that allowed the&nbsp;<em>balseros<\/em> to stay in America legally if they touched American soil.<\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump undid many Obama-era concessions, including allowing cruise ships to use stolen ports to profit from business with the Castro regime and ending the \u201cpeople-to-people\u201d embargo exception that saw a parade of American celebrities \u2013 including Kanye West, Katy Perry, and Diplo \u2013 visit the island, protected by their wealth from seeing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/latin-america\/2020\/06\/10\/socialism-cubans-flee-rubble-another-building-collapses-havana\/\">reality<\/a> of Cuban life under communism.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Under the Biden administration, the U.S. Embassy in Cuba \u2013 reopened while Biden served as vice president after decades of closure \u2013 has taken to requesting that Cubans endure the horrors of the Castro regime rather than attempt to seek freedom in America.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom October 1, 2020, to September 30, 2021, the Coast Guard intercepted 838 Cuban migrants [sic],\u201d the embassy wrote in Spanish on its Twitter account last week. \u201cFrom October 1, 2021, to today, they have done the same with 402 [refugees]. Please, do not take to the sea.
