The agency had again estimated the number was 73%.<\/p>\n<p>The new estimates mean the Delta variant may still be going strong in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSetting aside the question of how the initial estimate was so inaccurate, if CDC\u2019s new estimate of #Omicron prevalence is precise then it suggests that a good portion of the current hospitalizations we\u2019re seeing from Covid may still be driven by Delta infections,\u201d former FDA chief Scott Gottlieb <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ScottGottliebMD\/status\/1475848395768086529\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a> on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>But Jasmine Reed, a spokesman for the CDC, said the revision was partly due to the \u201cspeed at which Omicron was increasing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCDC\u2019s models have a range, and\u2026 we\u2019re still seeing steady increase in the proportion of Omicron,\u201d Reed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/cdc-significantly-reduces-estimate-of-omicron-prevalence-in-the-united-states\">told<\/a> Fox News Digital. \u201cIn some regions in the country,&nbsp;Omicron&nbsp;accounts&nbsp;for ~ 90%&nbsp;or more&nbsp;of cases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The revisions come as the U.S. recorded its highest single-day total of new COVID-19 cases \u2014 441,278 infections, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/12\/28\/us-new-daily-high-covid-526223\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a> to Politico.<\/p>\n<p>But Reed said those numbers may be revised, too, noting the daily case total is likely an \u201coverestimate\u201d due to lagging state reporting.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a new report says rapid COVID-19 tests may be less effective at detecting the Omicron variant than earlier strains of the virus, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe finding was gleaned from preliminary studies conducted by the FDA in collaboration with the National Institutes of Health\u2019s RADx program on the performance of the at-home tests on the heavily mutated Omicron variant, the New York Post <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/12\/29\/fda-says-rapid-covid-tests-may-be-less-accurate-with-omicron\/\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEarly data suggests that antigen tests do detect the omicron variant but may have reduced sensitivity\u201d at detecting positive cases, the FDA said in a Tuesday statement. \u201cThe FDA and RADx are continuing to further evaluate the performance of antigen tests using patient samples with live virus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the FDA didn\u2019t urge people should avoid using antigen tests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe FDA continues to authorize the use of these tests as directed in the authorized labeling and individuals should continue to use them in accordance with the instructions included with the tests,\u201d the agency said. \u201cAntigen tests are generally less sensitive and less likely to pick up very early infections compared to molecular tests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The FDA did urge follow-up testing for those who test negative with a rapid antigen test but are experiencing symptoms.&nbsp;\u201cIf a person tests positive with an antigen test, they should self-isolate and seek follow-up care with a health care provider to determine the next steps,\u201d the FDA said.<\/p>\n<p><em>Joseph Curl has covered politics for 35 years, including 12 years as White House correspondent, and ran the Drudge Report from 2010 to 2015.
