Juliana Carlos, who had courtside seats next to her husband, claimed in a video after the spat that Lebron called her a \u201cf***ing b*tch.\u201d Carlos returned the favor, calling Lebron a \u201cf***ing p***y\u201d along with a host of other choice terms. There is no evidence that the NBA star actually said what he is accused of saying, and Carlos has since issued an apology and claimed full responsibility for the episode.<\/p>\n<p>Lebron has had little to say about all of this publicly, except to tweet: \u201cCourtside Karen was MAD MAD!!\u201d The Courtside Karen moniker quickly caught on, started trending on Twitter, and now most of the media headlines about the story use that nickname in reference to Carlos. This has been the trend for the past year or so. Obnoxious white women \u2014 or white women who are labeled obnoxious, fairly or not \u2014&nbsp;are called \u201cKaren,\u201d sometimes with an additional identifier like \u201cCourtside\u201d or \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/01\/12\/soho-karen-mocked-for-trash-crop-top-sandals-and-socks\/\">Soho<\/a>.\u201d A culture that finds nearly everything \u201cproblematic\u201d has somehow found no problems with this.<\/p>\n<p>Admittedly, in Juliana Carlos\u2019s case, the charge of obnoxiousness certainly applies. I have no interest in defending her on a personal level. Wealthy Instagram influencers who make fools of themselves in public are not widely viewed as sympathetic characters, and I have no intention of trying to change that. But what I loathe even more than spoiled brats like Carlos are double standards, and the \u201cKaren\u201d meme represents a rather massive one. \u201cKaren\u201d is in fact a racial slur, both in its common usage and its original intent, and I can find no compelling reason to give it a pass. A racial slur is a racial slur. They are all bad \u2014 even when used against white people, believe it or not.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who doubts the racial connotation of \u201cKaren\u201d need only listen to the people who originated and popularized it. Articles like Time Magazine\u2019s \u201cThe \u2018Karen Meme\u2019 Confronts the Violent History of White Womanhood\u201d and Teen Vogue\u2019s \u201cKaren Is Being Used by White Women \u2014&nbsp;Here\u2019s Why They Need to Stop\u201d make it clear not only that \u201cthe archetypal Karen is a white woman\u201d but that those who came up with this slur are very possessive and protective of it. As the Teen Vogue piece clarifies, the \u201cKaren\u201d meme is&nbsp;\u201can inside joke within communities of color.\u201d White people who adopt it or try to erase its racial connotation are guilty of a kind of slur-appropriation.<\/p>\n<p>A Daily Beast essay from earlier this month says that \u201c\u2018Karen,\u2019 like the once-popular phrase \u2018Becky,\u2019 became a moniker to describe white women who were problematic.\u201d The author expresses a desire to abandon usage of the term, but not because it\u2019s racist. He fears instead that Karens are being dangerously \u201cnormalized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you prefer to go to Wikipedia for your information, here\u2019s what that site says about the origins of \u201cKaren\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>There are several possible origins of the term. One theory is that it is an evolution of an&nbsp;African-American Vernacular English&nbsp;term of referring to \u201cunreasonable white women.\u201d The term may have originated on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_Twitter\">Black twitter<\/a>&nbsp;as a meme used to describe white women who \u201ctattle on Black kids\u2019 lemonade stands\u201d. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bitch_(magazine)\">Bitch<\/a>&nbsp;[magazine] described it as a term that originated with Black women but was co-opted by white men.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>There is no doubt that this is a racial term. That is not a question.&nbsp;The question is whether, though it is a racial term, it qualifies as a racist term, a slur. To answer that question we can try a very simple thought experiment. Let us imagine an exactly analogous situation. What if white people on Twitter started to refer to obnoxious black women using a stereotypical black woman name? In order to properly frame this, let\u2019s consult an ABC News article from a few years ago listing what they call \u201cThe Top 20 \u2018Whitest\u2019 and \u2018Blackest\u2019 Names.\u201d Near the top of the \u201cblackest\u201d female names list, according to ABC News, is \u201cShanice.\u201d As a hypothetical example, what if there were an \u201cinside joke among white communities\u201d where unpleasant black women were &nbsp;called \u201cShanices\u201d? Imagine: \u201cOh man, I was at the grocery store and this <em>Shanice<\/em> comes up to me and\u2026 etc.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Would there be any doubt about whether that qualifies as racist? Would anyone dare suggest that it isn\u2019t racist? I certainly wouldn\u2019t. It would be absolutely clear to me that using a stereotypical black female name as a pejorative to refer to black women you don\u2019t like is extremely bigoted, in just about every conceivable way. Everyone would be on the same page. We all would agree that \u201cShanice\u201d is a slur, and obviously so. Many thinkpieces would be written with titles like \u201cThe Shanice Meme is An Attack On Black Womanhood\u201d and \u201c\u2018Shanice\u2019 Proves Racism Is Still Alive,\u201d and so on. The excuses offered for \u201cKaren\u201d wouldn\u2019t pass muster in the case of \u201cShanice.\u201d Just think:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s okay because the women we call \u2018Shanice\u2019 actually <em>are<\/em> annoying and obnoxious!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Shanice\u2019 isn\u2019t racist. Sometimes the word is applied to white people, too!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlack women call each other \u2018Shanice\u2019 sometimes. That must mean it\u2019s not racist!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>All of these justifications are offered for \u201cKaren.\u201d They would not work in the \u201cShanice\u201d hypothetical. And they shouldn\u2019t, because they\u2019re weak, silly, and beside the point.<\/p>\n<p>If it is so obvious that \u201cKaren\u201d originates as a racial slur, is intended to be a slur, is often used as a slur, and this exact kind of slur would never fly when applied to people of other races, then why do so few white people object to it? I think it is because white people in modern American culture don\u2019t think they\u2019re allowed to object to this kind of thing. They have come to believe, after years of brainwashing, that it would be racist for them to recoil from racism targeted at them. Or else they believe that racism towards other groups is a deep moral evil while racism towards them is, at worst, a frivolous concern. This is all wrong, of course. Racism is racism is racism. It is all bad. It is all worthy of condemnation.
