Thereafter, his pension and benefits would continue to increase through annual cost-of-living adjustments,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/adamandrzejewski\/2021\/12\/28\/dr-anthony-faucis-retirement-pay-will-exceed-350000-per-year--the-largest-in-us-federal-government-history\/?sh=1f5edce3609c\">Forbes<\/a> reported. \u201cFauci has 55 years of service as a federal employee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the outlet noted, Fauci was the highest-paid federal employee for the second year in a row, out-earning the President of the United States and more than 4 million of his federal colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Fauci earned $434,312 in 2020, the latest year available, up from $417,608 in 2019,\u201d Forbes explained. Between the years of 2018 and 2020 alone, Fauci earned a total of $1.252 million in salary.<\/p>\n<p>ABC\u2019s Jonathan Karl asked Fauci whether he has plans to retire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no way I\u2019m going to walk away from this until we get this under control. I mean, that\u2019s the purpose of what we do. That\u2019s \u2013 that\u2019s our mission in life. In the middle of it, I\u2019m not going to walk away,\u201d Fauci responded. \u201cYou know, we\u2019re in a war, Jon. It\u2019s kind of like we\u2019re halfway through World War II, and you decide, well, I think I\u2019ve had enough of this. I\u2019m walking away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t do that. You\u2019ve got to finish it \u2014 and we\u2019re going to finish this and get back to normal,\u201d Fauci said.<\/p>\n<p>Fauci <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajc.com\/news\/coronavirus\/dr-fauci-says-he-wont-step-down-until-covid-is-in-rearview-mirror\/6UFH4O5RMJEVBKO3KGICTBYQYE\/\">echoed<\/a> this viewpoint in an interview last month with CBS\u2019 \u201cFace the Nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m the head of an institute that actually played the major role in the development of the vaccines that have saved now millions of lives from COVID-19,\u201d Fauci said. \u201cI\u2019m the director of the institute that has now been very important in the basic research in leading to the drugs that will now have an important impact in the treatment of COVID-19. That\u2019s what I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, I\u2019m going to keep doing that until this COVID-19 outbreak is in the rearview mirror, regardless of what anybody says about me, or wants to lie and create crazy fabrications because of political motivations,\u201d Fauci added.<\/p>\n<p>As well as being the highest-paid federal employee, Fauci is one of the longest-serving in the federal government. Fauci first joined the NIH in 1966, and was appointed director of the NIAID in 1984.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/fauci-raked-in-the-largest-taxpayer-funded-salary-of-2019\">The Daily Wire<\/a> reported in January 2021: \u201cFauci, who earned his medical degree from Cornell University, raked in $3.6 million between 2010 and 2019 and last got a raise in 2014, when his pay went from $335,000 to its present rate of $417,608. Even if he doesn\u2019t get another raise, Fauci will make another $2.5 million between 2019 and 2024.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Forbes noted, Fauci has seemingly downplayed how much money he is making and continues to make, telling Matthew McConaughey in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/tv\/CD2WoXupHV-\/?utm_source=ig_embed\">interview<\/a> that he does not have millions invested in potential vaccines. \u201cMatthew, no, I got zero!\u201d Fauci said. \u201cI am a government worker.
