But the CDC has now walked back this number to 22.5%, not 73%.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rapidly spreading omicron variant is now the dominant Covid strain in the U.S., representing 73% of sequenced cases, according to data published Monday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/12\/20\/omicron-now-the-dominant-us-covid-strain-at-73percent-of-cases.html\">CNBC<\/a> reported on December 20. \u201cOmicron has displaced the previously dominant delta variant, which the CDC says is now an estimated 26.6% of sequenced cases for the week ending December 18. Just one week earlier, delta made up 87% of cases to omicron\u2019s 12.6%, the data shows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, the CDC \u201csignificantly revised downward the estimate of the percentage of new COVID-19 infections in the U.S. caused by the omicron variant of the virus,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/healthcare\/587506-cdc-lowers-estimate-of-omicron-prevalence-in-us\">The Hill<\/a> reported. As of Christmas, the CDC estimated that the number of new coronavirus cases attributable to Omicron was 58%.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a wide predictive interval posted in last week\u2019s chart, in part because of the speed at which Omicron was increasing,\u201d a CDC spokesperson told POLITICO. \u201cWe had more data come in from that timeframe and there was a reduced proportion of Omicron.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">CDC&#8217;s estimate for the prevalence of Omicron last week dropped significantly from 73.2% w\/ a 95% prediction interval of 34-94.9% down to 22.5% w\/ a 95% prediction interval of 15.4-31.5%. <\/p>\n<p>12\/25 estimate is 58.6% with a 95% prediction interval of 41.5-74%. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/eaMCVk3TEc\">https:\/\/t.co\/eaMCVk3TEc<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ZjEvREb7Gs\">pic.twitter.com\/ZjEvREb7Gs<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 David Lim (@davidalim) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/davidalim\/status\/1475844235991552002?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 28, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to agency data, omicron accounted for about 59 percent of all U.S. infections as of Dec. 25. Previously, the CDC said the omicron variant comprised 73 percent of all cases for the week ending Dec. 18. But that number has now been revised to 22.5 percent of all cases,\u201d The Hill reported. \u201cThe omicron variant is highly transmissible and spreading rapidly, resulting in surges of infections even among people who are vaccinated. However, people who are vaccinated, and especially those who have received booster shots, are well protected against severe disease from the variant, experts say, meaning it poses the greatest risk to the unvaccinated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Scott Gottlieb <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ScottGottliebMD\/status\/1475848395768086529\">argued<\/a> that, even though the \u201cinitial estimate was so inaccurate,\u201d the latest data indicates that \u201ca good portion of the current hospitalizations we\u2019re seeing from COVID may still be driven by Delta infections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/variants\/about-variants.html?CDC_AA_refVal=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cdc.gov%2Fcoronavirus%2F2019-ncov%2Fvariants%2Fvariant.html\">CDC<\/a>, Omicron was first identified in South Africa, and \u201cearly evidence suggests that fully vaccinated people who become infected with the Omicron variant can spread the virus to others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll FDA-approved or authorized vaccines are expected to be effective against severe illness, hospitalizations, and deaths,\u201d the CDC added. \u201cThe recent emergence of the Omicron variant further emphasizes the importance of vaccination and boosters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The highly contagious Omicron strain was first detected in the U.S. on December 1 in a fully vaccinated person who had traveled to South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/omicron-covid-variant-now-estimated-to-be-58-6-of-all-u-s-cases-cdc-says\">The Daily Wire<\/a> noted, a recent study found the Omicron variant could infect some 140 million Americans by March, but the majority of people who contract the variant might remain asymptomatic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are expecting an enormous surge in infections \u2026 so, an enormous spread of Omicron,\u201d said Dr. Chris Murray, director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/health\/2021\/12\/22\/covid-omicron-variant-ihme-models-predict-140-m-new-infections-winter\/8967421002\/\">according<\/a> to USA Today.<\/p>\n<p>Ian Haworth is an Editor and Writer for The Daily Wire.
