The healthcare supplies were eventually allowed to be transported to Britain, but only after the UK government stepped in.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Eurosceptic former Conservative Party leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith commented on the ordeal: \u201cThis shows you all you need to know about European co-operation\u201d.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">EU Members Fight Among Themselves as Bloc Lags UK, U.S. on Vaccines <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/TWmsTI1amk\">https:\/\/t.co\/TWmsTI1amk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Breitbart London (@BreitbartLondon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BreitbartLondon\/status\/1377923510820089863?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 2, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Following a lack of support from the EU during the outset of the pandemic, Italy was forced to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/china-sends-experts-ventilators-and-masks-to-italy-7zs6wtwk9\">rely on China<\/a> for assistance after neighbouring countries initially refused to sell Italy personal protective equipment (PPE) and ventilators.<\/p>\n<p>In March of last year, Germany also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/health-coronavirus-germany-exports-idUSL8N2AX3D9\">banned<\/a> the export of all medical protective gear such as masks, gloves and bio-hazard suits due to fears of shortages.<\/p>\n<p>The European Union threatened to block vaccine deliveries to the UK in March of this year after Britain managed to place a vaccine pre-order with AstraZeneca before the European Union.
