The DHS has also canceled border contracts and returned land that had been previously seized for border wall construction.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Biden signed an executive order Jan. 20 pausing construction on former President Donald Trump\u2019s southern border wall, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/biden-border-wall-executive-order\/2021\/01\/20\/5f472456-5b32-11eb-aaad-93988621dd28_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Washington Post<\/a>. Now, almost a year later, some social media users are claiming Biden has changed his mind and wants to resume building the border wall. An <a href=\"https:\/\/america.awm.com\/biden-changes-his-mind-and-now-wants-to-resume-building-trumps-wall-2-2-2-2\/?utm_campaign=buffer&amp;utm_content=buffer23f22&amp;utm_medium=facebook&amp;utm_source=america&amp;fbclid=IwAR0bzTXdHN0Befy9MvKad9-u_SR8WstcJcN7a-VELP3lzn3kO-mAL3IxUR4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a> accompanying the Facebook post quotes DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe president has communicated quite clearly his decision that the emergency that triggered the devotion of DOD funds to the construction of the border wall is ended,\u201d Mayorkas is quoted as saying. \u201cBut that leaves room to make decisions as the administration \u2013 as part of the administration \u2013 in particular areas of the wall that need renovation, particular projects that need to be finished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The quote appears to be genuine, as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2021\/apr\/5\/dhs-may-restart-border-wall-construction-plug-gaps\/\">Washington Times<\/a> included it in an April 2021 article. There is no evidence, however, that Biden has said he wants to resume building the border wall. Check Your Fact reviewed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/?s=border+wall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">White House website<\/a> and did not find any press release or statement from Biden calling for the continuation of constructing the border wall.<\/p>\n<p>White House Press Secretary Psaki reiterated in an Oct. 22 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/press-briefings\/2021\/10\/22\/press-briefing-by-press-secretary-jen-psaki-october-22-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">press briefing<\/a> that Biden did not agree with the southern border wall when comparing Trump\u2019s immigration policy to the president\u2019s. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/02\/26\/fact-check-joe-biden-n-word-speech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Did Joe Biden Say The N-Word During A Recent Speech?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat immigration policy resulted in separating kids from their parents, building a border wall that\u2019s feckless and that cost billions of dollars for taxpayers,\u201d Psaki said. \u201cThe President fundamentally disagrees on how we need to approach the immigration issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Activists have charged that the Biden administration has broken its promise not to continue construction on the border wall due to construction of what the U.S. Customs and Border Protection called a concrete levee at the border wall, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/text.npr.org\/1043458068\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NPR<\/a>. Texas Public Radio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tpr.org\/border-immigration\/2021-10-11\/biden-will-cancel-border-wall-contracts-but-construction-could-still-move-forward\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a> in October that some construction may move forward on the border wall, though that is due to Congress appropriating funds for the wall, not because of Biden wanting to do so.<\/p>\n<p>The DHS press office directed Check Your Fact to a June <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/news\/2021\/06\/11\/dhs-releases-plan-use-border-barrier-funds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">press release<\/a>, where the department said they would use funds appropriated from Congress for border wall construction to \u201cprioritize the remaining border barrier funds to address and remediate urgent life, safety, and environmental issues resulting from the previous administration\u2019s border wall construction.\u201d A June <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/news\/2021\/06\/11\/dhs-releases-plan-use-border-barrier-funds\">DHS border wall plan<\/a> further stated that the department \u201csuspended performance of all border barrier contracts and southwest border barrier construction activities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the DHS canceled several border wall contracts in October, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2021\/10\/08\/politics\/border-wall-contacts-canceled-biden-administration\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CNN<\/a>. An October press release from the DHS stated that while it would be doing environmental planning for other border projects, it \u201cwill not involve any construction of new border barrier or permanent land acquisition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration also returned land previously seized for border wall construction, CNN <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2021\/12\/07\/politics\/biden-border-wall\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>. The attorneys general of Texas and Missouri are suing the Biden administration to force the finish of the construction of the southern border wall, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2021\/10\/21\/texas-paxton-border-wall-lawsuit-biden\/\">Texas Tribune<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The claim that Biden resumed construction on the southern border wall also went viral in May, which&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.13newsnow.com\/article\/news\/verify\/government-verify\/no-the-biden-administration-is-not-resuming-border-wall-construction\/536-df1279c3-ed1b-4fe4-82da-72c6f6c8cb3b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">13 News Now<\/a> reported at the time was inaccurate. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineering said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/USACEHQ\/status\/1392636847612911617\">May 13 tweet<\/a> that it was doing repairs on levees. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/02\/26\/fact-check-joe-biden-sign-52-executive-orders-one-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Did Joe Biden Sign 52 Executive Orders In One Week?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">To be clear, wall construction remains paused to extent permitted by law.
