Criticizing the Biden administration on the reversal, Trump\u2019s Assistant Secretary for Health Dr. Brett Giroir warned the move &#8220;will cost thousands of lives.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"card paragraph-spacing collection-item \" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\"card-content font-flag\">\n<p>In a message <a href=\"https:\/\/fusion.inquirer.com\/politics\/nation\/joe-biden-opioid-treatment-x-waiver-stops-trump-order-20210128.html\">obtained<\/a> by The Washington Post last week, the Biden administration said Trump&#8217;s forthcoming Practice Guidelines for the Administration of Buprenorphine for Treating Opioid Use Disorder issued on Jan. 14 was announced &#8220;prematurely.&#8221; &#8220;Therefore,&#8221; team Biden said, &#8220;the Guidelines previously announced cannot be issued at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"card paragraph-spacing collection-item \" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\"card-content font-flag\">According to anonymous sources within the Biden team, Trump&#8217;s plan &#8220;was plagued by legal and operational problems, including a failure to get necessary clearance from the White House budget office,&#8221; the Post reported.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"card paragraph-spacing collection-item \" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\"card-content font-flag\">\n<p class=\"inq-p\">\u201cThe Biden-Harris administration absolutely supports broader access to medication-based treatment for opioid use disorder, and is working to find ways to lift burdensome restrictions on medications for opioid use disorder treatment,\u201d said a spokesperson from Biden&#8217;s drug policy office.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Trump&#8217;s plan &#8220;would have exempted many physicians from the &#8216;X&#8217; waiver \u2014 a two-decade-old requirement, first mandated by Congress, to undergo a day\u2019s training before they could prescribe buprenorphine for opioid use disorder,&#8221; the Post explained. &#8220;The Trump administration sought to go around Congress\u2019s requirements by issuing new &#8216;clinical guidelines&#8217; that would have enabled doctors with a Drug Enforcement Administration narcotics prescribing license to avoid the training.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Post underscored that Trump\u2019s plan &#8220;was widely hailed by physicians,&#8221; noting that with the head of the American College for Emergency Physicians Mark Rosenberg deemed the accomplishment &#8220;a great day for our patients.&#8217;&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"card-content font-flag\">\n<p class=\"inq-p\">\u201cThe X-waiver was an outdated and cumbersome barrier to treatment, and it exacerbated stigma for those struggling with opioid use disorder,\u201d said a statement from Rosenberg.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p\">&#8220;The Biden administration has been criticized by physicians and lawmakers since reports that the new president would halt Trump\u2019s plan \u2014 particularly because as a candidate, Biden had criticized the prescribing rules and vowed to lift them if elected,&#8221; noted the Post.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Giroir on Thursday took to Twitter to blast the Biden reversal, warning it &#8220;<span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">will cost thousands of lives.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">&#8220;This [POTUS]\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">decision [&#8230;]<\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">\u00a0means a tragic day for all suffering with <\/span><span class=\"r-18u37iz\"><a class=\"css-4rbku5 css-18t94o4 css-901oao css-16my406 r-1n1174f r-1loqt21 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\" role=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/opioid?src=hashtag_click\" data-focusable=\"true\">#opioid<\/a><\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\"> use disorder, and will cost thousands of lives.
