Today, their share of the market stands at 85 percent as presidential administrations and Congress have been unwilling to step in with antitrust maneuvers, once readily used to break up corporate monopolies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are contemplating getting out,\u201d rancher Steve Charter told the <em>Times<\/em>. \u201cWe are not getting our share of the consumer dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201cYou\u2019re feeding America and going broke doing it\u201d: After years of consolidation, four companies dominate the meatpacking industry, while many ranchers are barely hanging on.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/WtSzgcPmyC\">https:\/\/t.co\/WtSzgcPmyC<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/rcalfinthenews?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#rcalfinthenews<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 R-CALF USA (@RCALFUSA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RCALFUSA\/status\/1475517324035772416?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 27, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Even as inflation has sent beef prices skyrocketing for American consumers, the ranchers say their share of the $66 billion industry has been transferred to the corporate meatpackers whom they say are controlling prices within the industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir goal is to control the market so that they can control the price,\u201d Marion Nestle, an expert on the issue at New York University, told the <em>Times<\/em>. \u201cThe pandemic exposed the consequences of the consolidation of the meat industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some ranchers say they have not turned a profit in five years. At the same time, corporate meatpacker JBS \u2014 which is owned by Brazilian billionaires Wesley and Joesley Batista \u2014 has raked in $18 billion in revenues from July to September of this year. The revenues represent a 32 percent increase compared to the same time the year before.<\/p>\n<p>Unmentioned by the <em>Times<\/em> is that former President Obama, with the help of Republicans and Democrats in Congress, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/C65sO\">ended<\/a> nation-of-origin labeling for beef and pork products sold in the United States market following pressure from the World Trade Organization (WTO).<\/p>\n<p>The corporate meatpackers, including Tyson, <a href=\"https:\/\/talkbusiness.net\/2015\/12\/tyson-foods-meat-processors-call-for-repeal-of-cool-meat-label-after-tariff-rulin\/\">railed against<\/a> the nation-of-origin labeling rules as did the American Farm Bureau Federation which represents Big Agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re raised a farmer, and that\u2019s what you\u2019re supposed to do,\u201d 38-year-old Coy Young, a fifth-generation rancher, told the <em>Times<\/em>. \u201cIt\u2019s my family legacy.
