While he did mispronounce the first syllable of the word \u201cchildren,\u201d he immediately corrected himself.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span>Fact Check:&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tedros and other health experts participated Dec. 20 in a WHO media briefing in which COVID-19 vaccines were discussed, including distribution equity, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/multi-media\/details\/who-director-general-s-opening-remarks-at-the-media-briefing-for-geneva-based-journalists---20-december-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">transcript<\/a> of the event.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CXzrK03uK8z\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">viral Instagram post<\/a> alleges Tedros said during the same press conference that COVID-19 vaccine booster shots are being \u201cused to kill children.\u201d It features a screen grab of a since-updated article titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.infowars.com\/posts\/freudian-slip-w-h-o-director-says-covid-boosters-being-used-to-kill-children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Freudian Slip? WHO Director Says Covid Boosters Being \u2018Used To Kill Children\u2019<\/a>\u201d that was published Dec. 22 by InfoWars. The website InfoWars has, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poynter.org\/fact-checking\/2018\/infowars-is-banned-on-almost-every-social-platform-%C2%97-except-twitter-now-what\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Poynter<\/a>, shared misinformation in the past. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/10\/06\/fact-check-video-malaysian-child-adverse-reaction-covid-19-vaccine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED:Does This Video Show A Malaysian Child Having An Adverse Reaction To The Covid-19 Vaccine?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While Tedros did initially mispronounce the first syllable of the word \u201cchildren,\u201d he immediately corrected his pronunciation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/multi-media\/details\/who-director-general-s-opening-remarks-at-the-media-briefing-for-geneva-based-journalists---20-december-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">footage<\/a> of the media briefing shows. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/multi-media\/details\/who-director-general-s-opening-remarks-at-the-media-briefing-for-geneva-based-journalists---20-december-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">transcript<\/a> of his remarks quote him as saying, \u201cSo, if it\u2019s going to be used, it\u2019s better to focus on those groups who have the risk of severe disease and death, rather than, as we see, some countries are using to give boosters to children, which is not right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat occurred on Monday at the WHO press conference during his delivery of the word \u2018children\u2019 is that he got stuck on the first syllable \u2018chil\u2019 and it came out sounding like \u2018cil\/kil,&#8217;\u201d a WHO spokesperson told Check Your Fact via email. \u201cHe then correctly pronounced the same syllable immediately after, with it coming out audibly as \u2018cil-children\u2019. Any other interpretation of this is 100% incorrect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the media briefing, Tedros <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/multi-media\/details\/who-director-general-s-opening-remarks-at-the-media-briefing-for-geneva-based-journalists---20-december-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">went on<\/a> to say, \u201cThen the equity issues comes in here. Instead of boosting a child in high income countries, it\u2019s better to vaccinate the elderly in countries where the elders have not been vaccinated, even the primary vaccines.\u201d The WHO has previously said \u201cchildren and adolescents tend to have milder disease compared to adults, so unless they are part of a group at higher risk of severe COVID-19, it is less urgent to vaccinate them than older people, those with chronic health conditions and health workers,\u201d according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/diseases\/novel-coronavirus-2019\/covid-19-vaccines\/advice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WHO webpage<\/a> about COVID-19 vaccination.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/recommendations\/children-teens.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recommends<\/a> for people ages five and up to get vaccinated against COVID-19. The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-authorizes-pfizer-biontech-covid-19-vaccine-emergency-use-children-5-through-11-years-age\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">authorized<\/a> for use in children ages five to 15 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-approves-first-covid-19-vaccine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">approved<\/a> for use in people ages 16 and up by the Food and Drug Administration.
