In February the High Court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.judiciary.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Duchess-of-Sussex-Press-Summary-2021-EWHC-273-Ch.pdf\">ruled<\/a> that the publisher had illegally violated the Duchess\u2019 privacy with five articles after it published segments of a letter she had sent her father after her 2018 royal wedding. Judge Mark Warby said that the company\u2019s decision to publish large excerpts of the hand-written letter, which Markle penned after her royal wedding in May 2018, was \u201cmanifestly excessive and hence unlawful.\u201d In March he awarded Markle $625,000 in legal fees related to the case.<\/p>\n<p>Associated Newspapers tried to appeal those rulings in early December and were rebuffed again with senior appeals judge Sir Geoffrey Vos <a href=\"https:\/\/www.judiciary.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Sussex-v-Associated-News-judgment-021221.pdf\">ruling<\/a>,&nbsp;\u201cThose contents were personal, private and not matters of legitimate public interest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the time of that ruling, Meghan offered a statement to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/uk\/uk-tabloid-loses-appeal-privacy-case-brought-by-duchess-meghan-2021-12-02\/\">Reuters<\/a>, calling it \u201ca victory not just for me, but for anyone who has ever felt scared to stand up for what\u2019s right.\u201d She added, \u201cWhat matters most is that we are now collectively brave enough to reshape a tabloid industry that conditions people to be cruel, and profits from the lies and pain that they create.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In its analysis of the case, the U.K. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2021\/dec\/02\/meghans-all-out-war-may-have-taken-mail-on-sunday-by-surprise\">Guardian<\/a> said that Associated Newspapers was likely taken by surprise by Markle\u2019s \u201call-out war\u201d as the Royal Family typically prefers to settle such cases out of court.<\/p>\n<p>Said the outlet:<\/p>\n<p><em>&nbsp;\u201c<\/em><em>While the case did not change the law, it was emblematic of the changing balance of power between news organisations and celebrities since a statutory right to privacy was introduced in England and Wales in 2000.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The much-publicised revelations that Meghan had written the letter with the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2021\/nov\/09\/meghans-letter-to-father-written-with-public-consumption-in-mind-appeal-hears\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">possibility it might be leaked in mind<\/a>&nbsp;and that one of her team had&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2021\/nov\/10\/meghan-admits-her-pr-chief-gave-biography-authors-information-with-her-knowledge\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">supplied authors of a book about her with information<\/a>, apparently with her knowledge, were not enough to override her right to privacy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It concluded its assessment of the case by pointing out that \u201cBritish news outlets can still legally publish private correspondence, but they have to be confident that doing so is in the public interest \u2013 or, alternatively, be confident that the subject of the story will not sue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
