Biden had previously <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/pete-buttigieg-transportation-secretary-527fa592c27988342678b35d74ffdee9\">said<\/a> Buttigieg presents \u201ca new voice with new ideas determined to move past old politics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Associated Press <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/joe-biden-biden-cabinet-climate-cabinets-transportation-adaccf75c41ecf0b1628c009521d425f\">reports<\/a>, the confirmation also made Buttigieg \u201cthe first openly gay person to be confirmed to a Cabinet post.\u201d However, he is not the first openly gay person to serve in a president\u2019s Cabinet. Former President Donald J. Trump appointed Richard Grenell as acting director of national intelligence last year. The Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/trafficandcommuting\/pete-buttigieg-transportation-secretary\/2021\/02\/01\/e43795f8-60c6-11eb-9061-07abcc1f9229_story.html\">reports<\/a> that during Buttigieg\u2019s \u201cmedia blitz,\u201d he\u2019s been \u201creprising a role he played on the campaign trail to focus on the new president\u2019s climate change and racial justice goals, in addition to more traditional issues of infrastructure, safety, and federal spending.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Buttigieg takes over an agency with about 55,000 employees whose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transportation.gov\/about\">mission<\/a> includes striving \u201cto ensure America has the safest, most efficient and modern transportation system in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt its best, transportation makes the American dream possible, getting people and goods to where they need to be, directly and indirectly creating good-paying jobs,\u201d Buttigieg <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/pete-buttigieg-transportation-secretary-527fa592c27988342678b35d74ffdee9\">said<\/a> after being formally nominated for his new role in December. \u201cAt its worst, misguided policies and missed opportunities can reinforce racial, economic and environmental injustice, dividing or isolating neighborhoods, undermining government\u2019s basic role to empower everyone to thrive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Associated Press <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/joe-biden-biden-cabinet-climate-cabinets-transportation-adaccf75c41ecf0b1628c009521d425f\">reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>He is expected to play an important role in promoting Biden\u2019s sweeping green initiatives, helping to oversee stronger automotive fuel economy standards to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support the president\u2019s push later this year on a $2 trillion climate and infrastructure plan.
